Ten projects have been shortlisted in the Digital Hub’s Dare2BDrinkAware 2010 digital filmmaking competition. Participating teams were challenged to creatively explore the relationship between Irish culture and drinking through considering the values, attitudes and behaviours that young adults have in relation to alcohol.
Ten finalists will now compete for awards including Best Drama, Best Documentary, Best Animation, Best Overall Film and a Public Vote.
The chosen projects include; ‘A Serious Mix Up’, from Lynch productions about a girl faced with a choice who makes the wrong decision; ‘Carpe Noctem’, from the Tralee IT Film Society which investigates how people can be susceptible to the whims of strangers; ‘Draw the Line’, from WideEyed Media which looks at the ready availability of alcohol in modern Irish family homes.
‘Ghost of Drinking Past’, by TinFoil media, explores the life of an old alcoholic man who is visited by ghost who takes him through his life; MIM Productions’ ‘Give a Dog a Bad Name’ takes a mockumentary approach to exploring alcohol usage in Irish universities; ‘Off Colour’ from LeCro compares a day in the life of a student following a normal night’s sleep and a night of excessive drinking.
Maire Media’s ‘Silent Drinking’ examines the rise in alcoholic liver disease in young Irish people, especially women; ‘So What Happened Last Night?’, by Johnny + Ivars, is a mockumentary that looks at the destructive effect alcoholism is having on James Fox; ‘The Big Man’ from Stocious Altogether productions shows the effects of alcohol on behaviour by comparing the traits of a 20-year-old drinker to that of the immaturity of a child, and finally, ‘The Butcher’, from Lacky Productions, emphasises the damage binge drinking binge drinking can cause to the body’s vital organs.
The shortlisted film that receives the highest number of votes will win the Public Vote prize of €1,000. Results will be announced at the DARE2BDRINKAWARE.ie Awards on Thursday, April 29th at the Digital Hub.
