Taoiseach Brian Cowen has announced Mary Hanafin will succeed Martin Cullen as the new re-branded Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport (previously Arts, Sport and Tourism).

Speaking in Dáil Éireann yesterday, Brian Cowen said the Presidential Commission, on his advice, had accepted the resignation of former Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen – who has reportedly resigned his position due to an ongoing health condition.

In his speech Mr. Cowen emphasised the importance of the sector in his plan for economic recovery in Ireland, “I want to refer specifically to the important role to be played by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport not only in the vital area of tourism policy and performance, but in realising the full potential of our strong performance and reputation in the area of arts and culture, and ensuring that the creative industries play their full part in the vital task of economic renewal,” he said.

Hanafin, who moves from her ministerial position in Social and Family Affairs, said she was “delighted” with her new role and relishes the prospect of supporting the Irish creative industries. "The day you lose sight of creativity and arts and culture -- what this country is famous for -- will be a very sad day, and I intend to get out there and promote it," she said.
