‘New Directors’, a new initiative by RTÉ’s Factual department which looks to give up and coming directors a chance to showcase their talents, sees one such director, Pete Higgins helm ‘UFO’ which broadcasts on Monday, March 15th on RTÉ2.
The town of Boyle, Co. Roscommon, which has a population of approximately 2,500, was the location of a mysterious crash in 1996 which many people believed to be a UFO. This event inspired a local woman, Betty Myler, to form the Western UFO Society - which has since developed into the UFO Society of Ireland. In this project Pete Higgins explores the belief and scepticism in the small community as a result of this possible otherworldly visit. ‘UFO’ is produced by Hawkeye Films.
Other 30 minute documentary projects featured in the season include ‘Inside the Dead Zoo’, directed by Patrick Butler and produced by Tailored Films; Frank Berry’s ‘Into the Light’, which is produced by DIT; ‘Artaud On Aran’, produced by Pooleen Productions and directed by Rossa Mullin who also respectively produce and direct ‘Words into Silence’, and Big Yes Productions’ ‘Clown Around Lesetho’ from director Jonathan Gunning.
Each of the projects broadcast on Monday evenings at 11.30pm. ‘UFO’ will show on RTÉ2 on Monday, March 15th.
