Ill Health Leads to Formal Resignation of Minister Cullen

Minister Cullen
Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism has informed An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD, that due to a current medical condition he is retiring from public life.

Minister Cullen’s letter to An Taoiseach today states: “As you are aware, from our discussions in January, I have been suffering some months now with a serious illness. During this period I have carried out, as agreed with you, my ministerial duties in full and both your personal support and that of our colleagues in Government has been a great help.”

The minister goes on to explain that his consultant’s have advised him to retire from public life as his condition is deteriorating. He also describes his pride at representing the interests of the people of Waterford City and County and to have served in successive Fianna Fáil led Governments across Finance (OPW): Environment, Heritage and Local Government; Transport; Social and Family Affairs and your appointment of me to Arts, Sports and Tourism.

The letter finishes with Minister Cullen’s formal resignation pending its acceptance by President McAleese.
