Grand Pictures have announced details of two new projects - a feature film co-production with Bavaria Pictures entitled ‘Death of a Superhero’, and a new six part TV series ‘Trivia’ with RTÉ and funded by the BAI Sound and Vision Fund.

Directed by Ian FitzGibbon (A Film With Me In It), ‘Death of a Superhero’ is a movie about a terminally ill teenager’s fight for life and pleasure. The screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by Anthony McCarten. ‘Death of a Superhero’ is produced by Michael Garland (Spin the Bottle) and Philip Kreuzer (The Solitude of Prime Numbers) and the film’s six week shoot is planned for late summer in Dublin. It is expected that the film will receive a theatrical release late this year. Cast members for the film are TBC.

This feature will mark Grand Pictures’ eleventh feature production. Previous titles include ‘Spin the Bottle’, which enjoyed box office success in Ireland, and ‘The Race’, starring Colm Meaney (The Snapper), which has sold to more than twenty territories worldwide.

From feature film to television, Grand Pictures has unveiled ‘Trivia’, a six part comedy series for RTÉ that will be similar in scale to the company’s last production ‘Val Falvey’. ‘Trivia’ will be writer Damien Owens’ TV debut while Tom Hall (Bachelor’s Walk) will direct and Paul Donovan (Wide Open Spaces) will produce. The series is set in Monaghan and will deal with a group of friends on a pub quiz team and, in particular, their captain, a man who knows it all but has learned nothing. ‘Trivia’ will be filmed for five weeks in Dublin and Kildare and is expected to be broadcast this coming Autumn. Again the cast for this project is TBC.

Grand Pictures’ comedy production dates back to Ian FitzGibbon’s debut ‘Paths to Freedom’ and more recently ‘Val Falvey’, co-written by Arthur Mathews and Paul Woodfull and starring Ardal O’Hanlon (Wide Open Spaces) and IFTA Nominee, Owen Roe (Intermission). ‘Trivia’ will be Grand’s eighth foray into TV comedy and principal photography is planned for May/June.
