Irish man Richard Baneham and his team walked away from the 2010 BAFTA ceremony with the prize for best Special Visual Effects for their work on James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’. The awards were held in London on Sunday, February 21st.
As ‘Avatar’s animation supervisor, Dubliner Richard shares the award with Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum and Andrew R. Jones alongside whom he is also currently nominated for an Academy Award. The visual effects team beat off competition from the visual effects teams from ‘District 9’, ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, ‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘Star Trek’.
Richard was previously the animation supervisor for ‘Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ for which he was awarded a Visual Effects Society’s award in 2006 in the category of Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Motion Picture. He has also worked as the animation supervisor for both ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’, ‘Scooby Doo’ and ‘Cats & Dogs’.
