Irish Talent Lauded with Five Oscar Nominations
02 Feb 2010 :
The 82nd Academy Award Nominees were announced today, Tuesday, February 2nd and Irish talent has been lauded with nods for Cartoon Saloon’s ‘The Secret of Kells’ in the Best Animated Feature Film category, Juanita Wilson and James Flynn’s ‘The Door’ in the Short Film (Live Action) group, Brown Bag Film’s ‘Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty’ in the category of Short Film (Animated), Richard Baneham for his role as Animation Supervisor for 'Avatar' which received a Visual Effects nomination and finally Peter J Devlin who was nominated in the category of Sound Mixing for 'Star Trek'.
‘The Secret of Kells’ is directed by Tomm Moore (The Three Wise Men) and produced by Paul Young (Skunk Fu). It is an animated retelling of the provenance of Ireland's cherished Artefact, the Book Of Kells. With the Viking hordes approaching, the monks of Kells are forced to turn their attention from transcribing manuscripts to building barricades. The future of the precious book is in jeopardy and it falls to Brendan, young nephew of the abbot Cellach, to save the day. The feature length animation is also nominated for two IFTAs in the categories of Film and Animation. ‘The Secret of Kells’ will compete against Universal’s ‘Coraline’, 20th Century Fox’s ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, Disney’s ‘The Princess and the Frog’ and Pixar’s ‘Up’.

‘The Door’ introduces a world where a door is thought to be a universal symbol of life, of death, of entering the next life. The film’s main character Nikolai, played by Igor Sigov, gives us what he sees as the facts, yet he himself is trying to make sense of them in his own mind. The story moves forwards and backwards in time, revealing the events retrospectively as the viewer bears witness to the universal tragedy of Chernobyl through the eyes of one man. The film won an IFTA in 2009 in the category of Short Film, it is directed by Juanita Wilson, produced by Louise Curran (co-producer, One Hundred Mornings) and James Flynn (Ondine) and the director of photography is Tim Fleming (Wide Open Spaces). The other nominees in the Short Film (Live Action) category are Patrik Eklund and Mathias Fjellström’s ‘Instead of Abracadabra’, Gregg Helvey’s ‘Kavi, Luke Doolan and Drew Bailey’s ‘Miracle Fish’ and Joachim Back and Tivi Magnusson’s ‘The New Tennants’.

Brown Bag Film’s ‘Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty’ is a six-minute film directed by Nicky Phelan, produced by Darragh O’Connell and written and performed by comedian Kathleen O’Rourke. The film tells the story of a seemingly sweet old lady who terrifies her little granddaughter at bedtime with her dark version of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. The animation won an Animation IFTA in 2009. Director Nicky Phelan tells IFTN that the Granny O’Grimm team heard of their nomination in an unexpected manner “We lost the live coverage before they announced the animation nominees" he says "so it was actually Darragh’s mother who told us about our nomination – we were all prepared and still ended up hearing about the nomination from Kildare and not Hollywood!” He continues by describing the electric atmosphere in the Brown Bag Films building: "Everything’s up in the air – it’s obviously very exciting. We’re hoping to get a gang over to the awards themselves now.” He finished with a tribute to his fellow animation nominees “It’s brilliant also to see Paul and Tomm nominated for ‘The Secret of Kells’, and it’s a fantastic reflection on the talent there is in the Irish animation industry nowadays.”

The animation’s star, Granny O’Grimm was, however, somewhat less than enthused with the news of her nomination: “An Academy Award nomination is not going to boil the potatoes now is it?” She stated simply. However when the prospect of her attire for the awards ceremony her outlook brightened somewhat, saying: “I’ll maybe restrict myself to one chocolate gateau a day for the moment – so I can wear the frock that I bought for my husband’s funeral. It has only one stain, I never could get the pink champagne mark out”. Granny O’Grimm’s fellow nominees include Fabrice O. Joubert’s ‘French Roast’, Javier Recio Gracia’s ‘The Lady and the Reaper’, Nicolas Schmerkin’s ‘Logorama’ and Nick Park’s ‘A Matter of Loaf and Death’

Irish man Richard Baneham has been nominated in the category of Visual Effects for his work on James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ alongside Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum and Andrew R. Jones. The four will compete with the visual effects teams involved with ‘District 9’ and ‘Star Trek’. Richard worked as Animation Supervisor on the feature which has garnered 9 nominations in total including Best Picture.

Finally Peter J Devlin has received a nomination in the category of Sound Mixing alongside Anna Behlmer and Andy Nelson for 'Star Trek'. Peter has already been nominated for an Oscar in sound categories for Tranformers and Pearl Harbour. His team will face competition from the sound teams behind 'Avatar', 'The Hurt Locker', 'Inglorious Basterds' and 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'.

The winners of the 82nd Academy Awards will be announced on Sunday, March 7th. For a full list of the Oscar nominations visit http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/82/nominees.html.
