Irish short film ‘The Basket Case’, written and directed by Owen O’Neill and produced by Katie Holly (One Hundred Mornings) of Blinder Films, has won the award for Best International Live Action Short at the Fantaspoa Film Festival in Brazil, a festival specifically geared towards the fantastic genre.
‘The Basket Case’ has already enjoyed success during its festival run, winning the Best Short Fiction Award at the Boston Irish Film Festival in November 2008. It was described by the adjudicators as “a beautiful and memorable film”.
The short film which stars IFTA nominee Declan Conlon (Fair City), Marcella Plunkett (Once), IFTA nominee Simon Delaney (Happy Ever Afters) and Deirdre O’Kane (Boy Eats Girl) is about a man’s love for his dying wife – and the lengths he will go to in order to prevent being parted from her. ‘The Basket Case’ is described by blinder films as “a dark, twisted, comic tale of love, devotion, death and debt, set in small town Ireland.”
