Short Film News: Image Now Films & Fergal Rock Enjoy Shorts Success
12 Nov 2009 :
Image Now Films are currently in Post-Production with ‘Bad Robot’ and were winners at the recent Novara Film Festival; and Fergal Rock’s latest short film ‘Henry and Sunny’ has been selected to screen at We the Peoples Film Festival in London and production will commence at the end of this month on his new project ‘On Our Way’.

ImageNow Films Victorious at Novara

Image Now Films’ recent project, the short film ‘The German’, recently won the Best Soundtrack at the Novara Film Festival in Italy. Written and directed by Nick Ryan, the film examines a duel between two ace pilots during World War II and stars Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla, Prince of Persia) and Christian Brassington (Easy Virtues, Elizabeth:The Golden Age).

The film’s soundtrack, written by Nick Seymour (Crowded House) and Brian Crosby (ex-Bell X1) and recorded in their Exchequer Street studios in Dublin, won the Best Soundtrack award at Italy’s Novara Film Festival held at the end of October. ‘The German’ was produced by Olivia Leahy of Image Now Films (A Lonely Sky, The Silent City, Uncle Bills Barrel) as part of the Irish Film Board's Short Cuts scheme and has previously screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival, LA Shorts Film Festival, Sao Paulo Film Festival, Chicago Film Festival, La Boca del Lobo Film Festival in Madrid, Cork and Galway.

Director of ‘The German’, Nick Ryan tells IFTN: “Nick (Seymour) and Brian were delighted to be awarded the honour for their creativity and long hours to create the classical score for the film. I personally felt that their collaboration on the project brought an essential element to the film, driving the dramatic pace of the film and underscoring the melancholic catharsis of the final scene.”

“The film's success has been great” he continues “less so in the festival circuit, but it was instrumental in me being represented for feature films by UTA (United Talent Agency) in the US and ITG (Independent Talent Group, formerly ICM) in the UK. Through this, I have met with producers from most of the major studios and production companies on both sides of the Atlantic, and look forward to the opportunities arising from that.”

The Image Now Films team is currently in Post-Production on the Irish Film Board's funded short, 'Bad Robot', a sci-fi comedy about human-robot interaction which is written and directed by Ruairi Robinson (executive producer, Uncle Bill’s Barrel) and produced by Nick Ryan (The Silent City).

Fergal Rock Kept Busy with Festival Screening and Start of New Shoot

'Henry & Sunny', a short film written & directed by Fergal Rock (Tom Waits Made me Cry) has been invited to screen as part of the We The Peoples Film Festival in London. This year's festival, which will be held at various London venues on the 19th November 2009 and from the 23rd to the 30th November 2009, will feature contributions from development agencies, UN agencies, international filmmakers, policy makers and think tanks.

'Henry & Sunny' will be screened on Saturday, November 28th at 4.30pm. This will be 'Henry & Sunny's' third festival appearance after recent screenings at the Flat Lake Literary & Arts Festival and the Clones Film Festival. A private cast & crew screening of the film will be held in The Lighthouse, Smithfield the same day.

Pre-production is already underway for Fergal Rock's next short film 'On Our Way'. The film tells the story of Thomas and Anna, two lost souls on the outskirts of society. Anna works as a waitress at Lou’s Casino, Thomas works behind the bar at ‘Charlie’s’. The story is set in a place of crumbling beauty characterised by empty run down cinemas, dance halls and diners. When Anna, desperate to find love, places a personal ad in the local newspaper Thomas, heartbroken but anxious to move on, calls her up but the line is engaged. Later, after a disastrous date Anna flees to the all-night cinema where a chance encounter with Thomas leads to a surprising night of coffee, dancing, smashing beer bottles and who knows, perhaps even falling in love.

The film stars Dorothy Cotter (Henry & Sunny, Bel’s Boys, The Clinic) and Matthew Keenan (Henry & Sunny, The Tudors, The Clinic) and will by directed by Fergal Rock (Henry & Sunny, Tom Waits Made Me Cry). The Director of Photography is Orla Russell-Conway (Henry & Sunny, Full Circle), and the film will edited by Nick Callan (Henry & Sunny) and produced by Noni Stapleton. ‘On Our Way’ will be shot entirely on location in Dublin. Filming will commence in the last week of November.
