Nuala Ó Faoláin
The occasional RTÉ series ‘Cloch Le Carn’ returns today, Monday, November 9th to investigate the life and work of prominent Irish figures who have passed away. The two-part series starts next week and features an episode dedicated to Irish journalist, producer and teacher Nuala Ó Faoláin and an episode dedicated to singer Joe Dolan.

Many people may be aware of Nuala Ó Faoláin as a result of her writing or indeed her intimate interview with Marian Finucane on the latter’s radio show where, six weeks after being diagnosed with two inoperable brain tumours, she announced; "Even if I gained time through the chemotherapy it isn't time I want. Because as soon as I knew I was going to die soon, the goodness went out of life. It amazed me, Marian, how quickly life turned black, immediately almost." ‘Cloch Le Carn’ provides a space for some of the people who were close to Nuala O Faolain to reflect on both a public and private life full of conflict, controversy, pain and laughter and to give audiences a further insight into Nuala’s life.

Another Irish figure whose life will be examined is singer and sometimes sex symbol, Joe Dolan. The reflective programme will look at the Mullingar man’s life before his death in 2007 using foreign archive material previously unseen in Ireland.

Joe Dolan and his brother Ben founded their showband, ‘The Drifters’, in 1960, just as the showband craze was taking off. However, it soon became clear that Joe was the real star, and the group was soon renamed ‘Joe Dolan and the Drifters’. Unlike most Irish showband singers, Joe went on to become an internationally recognised star, recording original songs and selling millions of records around the world. The programme will also examine the controversies that surrounded Joe when he was alive such as drink driving, gigs in apartheid-era South Africa, an air rage incident on an Aer Lingus plane, and non-payment of taxes.

‘Cloch Le Carn’ series producer Kevin Cummins (Léargas) tells IFTN: “The title of this occasional series ‘Cloch le Carn’ could be literally interpreted as ‘adding a stone to the funeral mound’ but in reality the series is taking a constructive but not always uncritical look at public figures who've made a controversial contribution to Irish society in their lifetimes.”

“Earlier in the year we focused on Conor Cruise O'Brien & Tony Gregory, now in Mí na Samhna – the month where we remember those who have gone before us Cloch Le Carn features two influential figures in Irish writing and music; Joe Dolan and in the first programme Nuala O’Faoláin.”

The episode of ‘Cloch Le Carn’ that explores Nuala O’Faoláin’s life is directed and produced by Niamh Ní Churnáin (assistant producer, Inside 252)) and the programme is edited by Emmet McCarthy (Fair City). The episode of the series that explores Joe Dolan’s life is directed and produced by Séan Ó Mealoid and edited by Lorcan Maloney (Fair City) , The cinematographer for both programme is is Matt Naughton (Painting Politics

The first ‘Cloch Le Carn’ programme will be shown on Monday, November 9th on RTÉ1 at 7.30pm.
