Ken Wardrop’s four minute documentary short ‘The Herd’ has been named among the list of films nominated in the Best Short Film category for the European Film Awards 2009.
‘The Herd’ is an examination of bestial identity crisis when a deer befriends a herd of Limosin cattle. The short film received completion funding from Bord Scannán na hÉireann / Irish Film Board. It was produced by Andrew Freedman and directed, shot and edited by Ken Wardrop.
This year marks the 22nd year of the European Film Awards which are held annually and are attended by approximately 2,000 European film professionals who hold the common aim of promoting European film.
Other films featured nominated in the Best Short Film category include Valéry Rosier’s ‘Bonne Nuit (Good Night), Asitha Ameresekere’s ’14’, which came away with the Prix UIP Cork for Best European Short Film at the Cork Film Festival 2008 and was then nominated in this category, ‘Was Bleibt’ from director David Nawrath and ‘Sinner’ from Meni Philip.
The nominated films were chosen by the festival's international jury consisting of writer/author/film critic Manuela Cernat from Romania, casting director Nancy Bishop from the U.S.A, producer/director Jacques Mitch from France, music and film publicist Gerald Weber from Austria and director/writer/ producer Vassilis Mazomenos from Greece.
Also this year, as a change from the regular system and as a nod to Berlin's contribution to RUHR.2010 European Capital of Culture, the European Film Awards will take place in Germany's Ruhr Metropolis. The award winners will be announced on December 12th during the Awards Ceremony in the Century Hall (Jahrhunderthalle) in Bochum.
