Culture Night 2009 will take place this year on Friday, September 25, whereby cultural organisations all over Ireland will open their doors until the late hours with an impressive programme of free outdoor and indoor events such as screenings, guided tours, workshops, talks and live performances.
This annual event, which started in 2006, now takes place in towns and cities the length and breadth of Ireland such as Tralee, Sligo, Leterkenny, Mayo, Wexford, Roscommon, Galway, Limerick, Cork, Belfast and Waterford.
The Culture night model that originated in Dublin now sees over 120 organisations participating in events there. These include a screening of Muriel Box’s ‘This Other Eden’ in Temple Bar’s Meeting House Square at 10.30pm. This film, from 1959, is a caustic comedy about the effect of the civil war on a small Irish village.
Smithfield’s Lighthouse Cinema plans to host an animation event on the night. Renowned playwright and director, Conor McPherson discusses the new Gate Theatre production of ‘The Birds’, which he adapted from the short story by Daphne Du Maurier, and will also direct.
The Ranelagh Arts Festival, in association with the Village Cine Club, is also participating in the event with a musically accompanied screening of the silent German expressionist film ‘History of Harry’. Richard Farrell and Simon Wall will provide the aforementioned musical accompaniment. This screening will happen from 10.00pm at the Ranelagh Luas station.
More screenings will happen at Filmbase with several short films being screened, among these the Irish premiere of Liam Gavin’s ‘Sunshower’ and the world premiere of Marc-Ivan O’Gorman’s ‘Blood Coloured Moon’ along with filmmaking workshops and an animation demonstration organised for younger event participants.
