RTÉ Diversity Greenlights Sideline's Choir Comp
24 Aug 2009 :
Sideline (The Model Agent, Hollywood Trials) are due to commence production on a new Irish language series for RTÉ One ‘An Cór’, a new Irish language singing competition that will be broadcast over four shows during Seachtain na Gaeilge March 2010.

A bi-lingual TV series, six of the best or most suitable choirs in the country that consist mainly of English speaking singers will have to learn, rehearse and perform the most popular Gaelic songs.

Presented by Fiachna O’ Braonáin (Hothouse Flowers), the six choirs will immerse themselves in the culture, language and history of traditional Irish songs like Báidín Fhelimí, Óró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile, Poc ar Buile, Bean Phaidín and Beidh Aonach Amárach. Series producer / Director will be Rachel Moriarty with Lucia Gavin as production manager.

In each of the first three shows two choirs compete against each other whilst learning and understanding the words and rehearsing the pronunciation. Meanwhile Fiachna travels the country understanding the back story of the songs themselves and mentors the choirs as they attempt to impress the judging panel (to be announced) with their final polished version. The three successful choirs from the heats then compete in the final show with one choir crowned the winner on the final RTÉ One programme in March 2010.

Sideline Production’s are currently seeking choirs from all styles and nationalities, over 18 years of age, to take part in the new series. The choir must be formed prior to the competition, a high standard of performance led by a charismatic conductor are all desired attributes required to take part in this unique competition.

To download an application form interested choirs should log onto www.rte.ie/tv/wanted or www.sideline.ie.

The closing date is Friday September 11th

Choirs that meet the criteria and contain Irish-speaking members are particularity encouraged to enter. All choirs have to be available initially for auditions and filming on selected dates between September and December 2009.
