UK Film Council & British Film Institute to Merge
20 Aug 2009 :
Sion Simon
UK Film Minister Siôn Simon has announced plans to merge the UK Film Council and the British Film Institute.

Announced today, August 20, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and key industry figures, are presently contemplating amalgamating the two entities to create one body that will take on the cultural and economic duties of both organisations, after long periods of discussions.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport will chair a working group that, with equal representation from both sides, will look into how a single body could be structured and governed and how such a move would improve its service to the film industry in the long term. Whilst it’s expected that the creation of a new body for film, with a clear line of accountability and a single Board would mean efficiency savings, the primary objective of the one entity is to enhance the British film industry.

As part of the proposed merge it is hoped the one body would be freed up to spend more of its funding on films and less on infrastructure, it is expected that this in turn would, in the long term, benefit the British film industry and its promotion on both a local and global scale.

The board will look closely at the practical and legal issues that would need to be resolved before such a merger could take place. A complete report is expected to be published before the end of the year.

The British government has assured that both the cultural mandate and the identity of the British Film Institute will be paramount to the success of joining the two organisations.  Both sides of the proposed merge seem to be willing to work together and explore the exciting opportunities and possibilities.

New chairman of the UKFC Tim Bevan welcomed the idea and said he was keen to work closely with the BFI and DCMS over the autumn to make the merge happen. Whilst BFI chair Greg Dyke also welcomed the move adding it was an opportunity for the body to “build on the strengths and success of our work in recent years.”
