‘Six Semesters’ & ‘Memoria’ Graduate to Galway Fleadh

Six Semesters
Two new Irish feature films, 'Six Semesters' & 'Memoria', undertaken both during and just after college by Irish students have made the screening list for this year’s Galway Film Fleadh.

‘Six Semesters’, entirely produced by DCU students, has secured a spot in the Wildcard Category at next weekend’s festival.

Shot almost exclusively on the DCU campus, the project was filmed whilst most of the cast and crew were in their final year of study in DCU. A romantic comedy set over three years of a college degree course, 'Six Semesters' centres on Eddie (Dallan McCormick) and his unique, entrepreneurial part-time job - breaking up couples. However, his somewhat suspicious view of love and romance takes an interesting turn when Ailbhe (Marie-Claire Hoey), a girl he meets on the very first day of college, begins to feature heavily in his complicated life.

Writer and director John McKeon said “Completing the film was a huge achievement for us. I am immensely proud of our finished product and excited that the selectors of the Fleadh have given us the opportunity to play it in a cinema in front of a proper cinema audience.”

Another feature, ‘Memoria’, written, produced and directed by Brian O’Toole will also be screening next weekend in the New Irish Cinema strand.

A labour of love, the film was made by graduates of IADT’s National Film School. People encompassing all aspects of film courses were involved in the shoot from the film production courses to make up etc, ‘Memoria’ was filmed during two separate trips to Portugal, except for one small scene which was shot on a Wicklow beach.

In the film Annie (Camille Donegan) and Stephen (Chris Gregory), a young couple embarking on their honeymoon in Portugal, struggle with a number of strange occurrences as soon as they arrive. Annie encounters a strange figure from her past and after nearly drowning in a swimming pool her life slowly begins to unravel.

The crew sourced all their equipment and film on location in Portugal. With a budget of €25,000, the feature was financed from a number of table quizzes, gigs in Crawdaddy in Dublin, donations and life savings.

Producers included Arthur Mulherne and Frances Macken whilst Irina Maldea acted as executive producer for Akajava Productions, D.O.P was Arthur Mulherne.

‘Memoria’ will screen in the Cinemobile outside Galway Townhall at 6pm on Saturday 11th July.

‘Six Semesters’ will screen in the Cinemobile outside Galway Town Hall at 4.00 pm on Thursday 9 July.
