Film Students at Fís09 - Dundalk IT
04 Jun 2009 :
Final year film students on the B.A. (Hons) in Video and Film Production at the Dundalk Institute of Technology are set to show their work to the public this week. The students, who have spent four years studying Video and Film at the college, have been working on these major projects for the past year.
Four groups, each with three team members, have developed different creative projects that aim to capture the audience’s eye.

‘The People’s Film’ is a project that sets out to see what happens when filmmakers gives creative control to a group of film fans. The result is a short dynamic action film that is a great example of what can be done with no budget but a lot of ingenuity. Visitors to Fís will be able to view the end result, as well as watch behind-the-scenes footage of the film.

Up-and-coming band Sanzkrit provided the inspiration for the next project, ‘Our video, your choice’ in which the student group produced three different videos for their song ‘Talk of the Town.’ Then music fans and industry professionals were invited to vote for the video that best represents the song. The team suggest it’s an approach that could be adapted for other music acts in the future, as it offers fans a chance to have direct input into the videos produced for bands.

‘Can Dreams inspire Creativity?’ That’s the question that three students set out to explore in their project, which will feature creative work inspired by dream diaries. The exhibition will include original soundscapes, short films and large photographic pieces — all based on ideas that came from participants’ dreams. The team says: “We were intrigued by the links between creativity and dreams.”

Genre movies are a staple element of the industry and three filmmakers from DKIT decided to test out what happens when you mix two types of films together. Their experiment has led to ‘A Better Day Tomorrow’, which sees a detective search for his girlfriend who seems to have been abducted by some bloodthirsty villains. Visitors can piece together the mystery when they watch the film in a specially constructed detective’s office.

Fís09 opens at 6 p.m. on Wednesday 3rd June in the Carrolls Building at Dundalk Institute of Technology and will also be on view from 12 noon until 9 p.m. on Thursday 4th June. Short films produced by final year students on the three year B.A. in Video and Film Production will also be screened as well as final projects by students on the B.A. in Communications in Creative Media, the B.A. (Hons) in Communications in Creative Media and the Bsc. in Computing in Games Development. Admission is free of charge.
