The Irish short films ‘The Man Inside’, written and directed by Rory Bresnihan, and ‘Avatar Days’, created by Gavin Kelly, have picked up awards at the European Independent Film Festival in Paris. Michael Dwyer joins the Jury for the ICCL Human Rights short film Competition; the winners of the Fresh Film Fest are announced and ‘Whatever Turns You On’ is selected to screen in US high schools.

‘The Man Inside’ was named the Best European Dramatic Short at the European Independent Festival. Based on a short story by Fernando Sorrentino, the film tells the story of Lisandro who accidentally locks himself into his apartment. It was produced by Lucy Dyke for Broken Pictures as part of the Irish Film Board’s Signatures short film scheme.

Best Documentary Short went to ‘Avatar Days’, the first short film by commercials directed by Gavin Kelly and produced by Dave Burke at Dublin graphic house Piranha Bar. Originally created for the Darklight Festival's '4 Day Movie' project, is a portrait of four online gamers in Dublin whose daily lives contrast with their virtual identities. Advanced 3D technologies and Motion Capture animation were used to insert the players' in-game characters over their real selves against the backdrop of the banal urban landscape which they inhabit.

ECU, the European Independent Film Festival is regarded a discovery point for European film makers and is a celebration of independent film talent from across the continent.

The ICCL Human Rights Film School has announced that leading film critic Michael Dwyer has joined the Competition Jury for their short film competition. The Jury already includes: Prof Bill Schabas, Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland, Galway, directors Jim Sheridan (In America), Kirsten Sheridan (August Rush), Rebecca Miller (The Ballad of Jack and Rose) and Senator David Norris. Short listing of entries will begin on 17 April 2009, with five shortlisted films presented to the Jury for consideration in early May 2009.

The short ‘Whatever Turns You On’ has been selected for competition at the 11/22 International Comedy Short Film Festival in Vienna in June. As well as screening as a finalist at the prestigious Aspen Shortsfest (April 1 – 5) writer and director Declan Cassidy has been assisted by Culture Ireland to attend the event and will also speak to students in American high schools about the film. ‘Whatever Turns You On’ was selected for showing in the high schools after it was identified as a film with a worthwhile message for students.

The Fresh Film Festival the premier accolade in Ireland for filmmakers aged 18 and under has announced its winners. The winning film was ‘The Grim Trials of Vida Novak’, directed by Nick Sheridan (Wexford) focusing on the subjects of racism, poverty & illness; ‘Transparent’, by Aisha Baraut (Kilkenny), took second place while 3rd place went to ‘Johnny Splitz’, a short film made by a group of young people from fifth year in Killinarden Community School Tallaght.
