Doc Series 'Mná na Mara’ Airs on TG4

Doc series Mná na Mara (Women of the Sea), produced by Open Eye Television in Baile Bhúirne, Co. Cork, began airing last Friday on TG4 and will run for five more weeks until April 24th.

The series tells the stories of five women whose lives revolve around the sea, charting the highs and lows as they face uncertainty and danger, and following their personal challenges at sea.

Funded by the BCI Sound and Vision Scheme and TG4, ‘Mná na Mara’ is directed by Rosie Nic Cionnaith whose credits include 'Muintir na Mara', another sea-based series for TG4. Filmed on location in Alaska, Ireland and the Mediterranean, the finished product features international coastlines and landscapes along with an up-close and personal insight into the ferocious sea, shot by Waterford cameraman Séamas Ó h-Aodha on the new Sony XDCam. Executive Producer Martin Cronin has is the driving force behind the series and whose other documentaries in the observational genre, include 'Customs' for RTÉ.

The five ‘Mná na Mara’ to feature are: Waterford born Grace O' Suillivan, a lifelong Greenpeace activist who leaves domestic life in Tramore to take to the high seas with Greenpeace again; Susan Feirtear from Aruba heads for the wilds of Alaska, for a new life as a salmon fisher; Donegal native Anne Marie Ward, one of the world's best long-distance swimmers, will attempt to swim the most difficult channel in the world, the North Channel between Ireland and Scotland; Róisín Ní Fhlatharta – Ireland’s first female marine engineer gives insight into the trials and tribulations of the Irish fishing industry and naval Officer Niamh Ní Fhátharta who hopes to break the mould by becoming the first female Chief Engineer in the Irish Navy.

The series will continue to be broadcast every Friday at 7.30pm on TG4 until April 24th 2009, with each episode also repeated on Sundays at 8pm.
