Janey Mary
Irish short films ‘Janey Mary’, ‘The Morse Collectors’ and ‘The Battle of the Boyne’ have all scooped international awards at recent festivals.

Paul Brady has picked up the Best Short Subject Award (Hollywood Discovery Award) for his film ‘Janey Mary’ at this year's prestigious Hollywood Film Festival.

‘Janey Mary’ tells the story of a five year old girl who goes begging for food through the destitute urban landscape of post-World War II Dublin and also won the Best Short Film at the Moondance International Film Festival. The festival took place between 22nd-27th October in Hollywood Los Angeles.

Other international winners included Christopher Nolan's ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Cook County’ by David Pomes for Best Feature Film, ‘The Forgotten Women’ by Dilip Mehta for Best Documentary, ‘The Magistical’ by Danny Oakley and John M. Cernak for Best Animation and ‘Don’t Cry (The Black Ghosts)’ by Jack Pettibone for the Hollywood Mobile Award.

Northern Irish short ‘The Morse Collectors’ has won first prize in the Live Action Film or Video category, awarded by the Adult Jury, at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. The CICFF is North America's largest film festival devoted to films for and by kids, and the only Academy®-qualifying children's film festival in the world.

This is the latest short from London and California based company, Hub Media. Directed by David Cooke (The Divine Details) and produced by Crawford Anderson-Dillon and Gary Sugarman, the film first screened in the market at Cannes Short Film Corner in May and then the Huesca Film Festival in Spain in June. Other festival screenings include the Galway Film Fleadh, the San Diego International Children’s Film Festival, the Rhode Island International Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Shortfest and HDFest and the LUCAS Children’s Festival in Germany.

Written by Pól Mag Uidhir, ‘The Morse Collectors’ is set in 1942 and tells the tale of two children living in Northern Ireland at the height of WWII. The children discover that their home is receiving war-time messages in Morse Code through such unusual and rather spooky mediums as dripping taps. The 15 minute short stars Katie Boyle, Oisin O'Connell and Sandra O'Connell and was filmed in at Galgorm Castle in Ballymena.

Finally, ‘The Battle of the Boyne’ directed by Lee Cronin from the Dublin based production outfit Agtel, won the Best International Historical Documentary at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival (NYIIFVF). The 15 minute adaptation of one of Ireland’s bloodiest battles is now a permanent fixture at the Battle of the Boyne Visitors Centre in Oldbridge, County Meath and was commissioned by the Office of Public Works.
