Over 50 Irish feature and short animations will screen at the upcoming PAF 2008 Animation Film Festival in Olomouc, Czech Republic running from 11 -14 December as part of the festival’s celebration on the past and future of Irish animation.
Animation houses Cartoon Saloon, Brown Bag Films, Monster Animation as well as a host of other freelance animators will be in attendance at the festival to see their works screen before an international audience.
Following the tradition of highlighting forgotten or undiscovered national animations, PAF is about to present Irish animated film, focusing on its development and current directions. PAF organizers have established the cooperation with Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon, who will present the very first public presentation of ‘Brendan and The Book of Kells’. The film, which is it’s finally stages will be presented by creators Tom Moore, Ross Murray and Ross Stewart. The feature animation ‘Carinvale’ by Terraglyph Productions will also screen.
Dermot Corrigan film journalist will also attend the festival to give an introductory talk about the history and development of animation in Ireland and so to add a bit of context for the films being shown.
Speaking to IFTN Corrigan says; ‘It is a well established international festival so films from different countries get to showcase their work on an international stage. There will be people from all over, that the Irish companies will be able to network and make contacts with."
The Irish focus will be divided into separate programmes. Cartoon Saloon will present a selection of their short films as well as their IFTA winning animation ‘Skunk Fu’ The other animations will screen in either the New Wave of Irish Animation, Irish about Irish or the Little Big Shorts programmes. These will include Brown Bag’s ‘Ding Dong Denny O'Reilly's History of Ireland’ and the Oscar nominated ‘Give Up Yer Aul Sins’ and Monster Animation’s ‘Dublin 1’ and ‘Not There Yet’. A variety of Irish Film Board Shorts will also screen along with titles from Metropolitan Films, Zanita Films, IADT and Rocket Animation.
