Hailed as the film “all parents should ensure their children see” 'The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas' has had an impressive box office opening, with a screen average of €10,137 in ROI, with the film is expanding to new sites on its second weekend.
The world premiere release of 'The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas', as the film has yet to open in Europe, has been propelled by critical support and strong audience word of mouth.
Beating the box-office opening weekend for prestigious award-winning literary adaptations such as 'The Kite Runner' and 'The Pianist', the film is set to continue performing successfully. 'The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas' has obviously touched a chord with Irish cinemagoers and exceeds the opening weekend take of the highly acclaimed 'There Will Be Blood' and also 'Gone Baby Gone' (which finally ran for over 13 weeks in Ireland). All three movies come from Miramax Films.
At the San Sebastian festival where the film received a standing ovation at its special screening on Friday 19th September, Irish author John Boyne was greeted by hordes of fans. Of the three million copies of the book sold worldwide over one million have been sold in Spain, so it's no surprise the Irish author received such a rapturous welcome.
The book was first published in 2006 and spent 66 weeks at Number One on the Irish Book Charts. It was also a New York Times bestseller and the winner of 2 Irish Book Awards, Bisto Book of the Year, and the Que Leer Award, among other accolades. The book has been translated into 35 languages and to date has sold 3 million copies worldwide, and as of this week, is once again at #1 on the Irish Book Charts and No. 1 in the UK children’s book charts.
