IFTA nominated director Virginia Gilbert (Hesitation, Striapacha) has been named by Screen International as one of the UK Stars of Tomorrow 2008.
The Irish based director joined a line-up of 20 up and coming filmmakers and actors on the Screen International list which included comedy writer Daisy Donovan, writer / director Tom Marshall (Daddy’s Girl), actress Scarlett Johnson (Eastenders, Adulthood) and writer / director Jane Linfoot (Creep, Youth).
Gilbert’s IFTA nominated directorial debut, short film ‘Hesitation’, received a BAFTA nomination, was named Best Short Film at the Galway Film Fleadh 2007 and scooped the Gold Hugo award at this year’s Chicago Film Festival 2008. She went on to direct three part series ‘Striapacha’ for TG4, which traced the history of prostitution in Ireland.
Gilbert’s latest project, RTÉ / Galway Film Centre funded short ‘Mea Culpa’, is currently in post-production at Windmill Lane. The short, produced by Aaron Farrell for Blinder Films, is a study in jealousy and stars Emma Bolger (In America) and Fiona O’Shaugnessy (Goldfish Memory). ‘Mea Culpa’ was shot by DOP Tim Fleming (Once, Small Engine Repair) with production designer Padraig O’Neill (Spin the Bottle, Adam & Paul).
“It was absolutely fantastic to have been chosen by Screen Daily,” Gilbert told IFTN. “All of my work has been based in Ireland, so it was quite funny that they named me as one of the UK stars of tomorrow, but it was a great honour.”
Gilbert is currently developing a project called ‘Now, Love’ with Ed Guiney from Element Pictures and is in the early stages of developing a French feature project with ‘Hesitation’ producer Julien Berlan.
