Martin Duffy’s fantasy feature ‘Summer of the Flying Saucer’ is set to receive its world premiere screening as the opening film for the Cinemagic Film Festival, Dublin. Cast and crew will attend the gala on Wednesday 23rd April and participate in a post-screening Q&A.
Written by Marteinn Thorisson, the €2 million budget Irish/Swedish co-production was shot on location in Galway for six weeks in September – October 2006. Actors including Hugh O’Conor (Speed Dating, Botched), Robert Sheehan (Rock Rivals, An Créatúr), Dan Colley (The Big Bow Wow) and newcomer Joanne Kiernan feature in the film.
Set in the ‘summer of love’, 1967, the story centres on 15 year old Dan Mullaney (Sheehan) who has a mundane existence on his family’s country farm. Dan’s dream of furthering his education is hindered by his father who believes he should take over the family business instead. However, when Dan befriends two strange visitors, one a beautiful girl named Janis (Kiernan), unimaginable adventures begin.
The film was shot by IFTA-winning DOP Seamus Deasy (The Tiger’s Tale, The General), with costume designer Jacquie Fitzpatrick and production designer Nicola Moroney. A CGI space craft was created for the project by Sweden’s Fido Films.
‘Summer of the Flying Saucer” was produced by Magma Films, Ireland, and Dog Pound Productions, Sweden, with funding support from the IFB and Eurimages.
