‘Life of Saint Mary’ Premieres in Paris
16 Apr 2008 :
Paris-based Irish artists Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly’s video installation ‘The Life of Saint Mary’ received its world premiere at the Cognitive Science Forum, Paris on Friday 11th April, 2008.

The installation, which screened from 10am-6pm in the Cite Universitaire International, is the result of collaboration between the artists and the 6th class children of Saint Mary’s Primary School, Tallaght. ‘The Life of Saint Mary’ is a 33 minute long HD video installation that reflects the lives, experiences and concerns of a contemporary group of Dublin children. The children were provided with video cameras to film their daily journey to and from school, with filming taking place between December 2006 and June 2007.

“Every child had their own way of using the camera; there were silent walkers, stand-up comics and environmental critics,” said Cleary. “An ordinary suburb, a place like any other, is transformed into a place like no other through the familiar and affectionate regard of 24 children.”

The artists worked in direct collaboration with the students, discussing and planning out the project in the class, demonstrating basic techniques to the children and introducing them to simple editing techniques using two handycams and a Macintosh computer.

‘The Life of Saint Mary’ is part of an overall project by the artists entitled CityLoops, which focuses on the journeys that an individual might make repeatedly over a long period of time.
