New TG4 series ‘Ceolchuairt’ which sees a host of Irish traditional musicians visit far flung destinations to explore new musical horizons, kicks off Sunday 27th January at 10.00pm on TG4.
The six-part series, produced by Magamedia, will see some of Ireland’s finest trad musicians embark on a personal pilgrimage to their very own musical Mecca, to find common ground, jam with the locals and unearth bizarre styles.
A diverse range of countries from India to Bulgaria, and Norway to Senegal provide the sounds and personalities for the musical melting pot of ‘Ceolchuairt’.
The first programme sees Rossa and Rónán Ó Snodaigh from Dublin band ‘Kíla’ make a musical trip around India, touring from Varanasi, India’s spiritual home on the banks of the Ganges to Mumbai. Next up is Connemara sean-nós dancer, Seosamh Ó Neachtain, who hangs out in Harlem as he explores the links between tap and sean-nós dancing. In episode three, Kerry solo singer Muireann Níc Amhlaoibh teams up with the famous female Bulgarian choirs to unearth the mystery that lies beneath their enchanting voices.
Later in the series Cork singer John Spillane heads upriver in Senegal in pursuit of the African Griots or praise singers; whistle player Cormac Breatnach, returns to his mother’s homeland, the Basque country; while Donegal fiddle player Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh embarks on a voyage of discovery to Norway in pursuit of her very own Hardanger, an eight stringed fiddle that has mesmerized her for years.
‘Ceolchuairt’ begins at 10.00 on Sunday 27th January on TG4.
