Strong Irish Presence Amongst Oscar Nominees

Irish talent features among this year’s Oscar nominations, with actress Saoirse Ronan, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, Irish resident Daniel Day Lewis all in the Oscar line-up, while Irish shot film ‘Once’ and Kirsten Sheridan’s ‘August Rush’ received nods nominated in the Achievement in Music categories.

Announced at the Academy Awards Beverley Hills Headquarters at 5.30am (1.30 pm Irish time), ‘There Will Be Blood’ and ‘No Country for Old Men’ led the way with eight nominations each.

Thirteen year old Ronan picked up the Actress in a Supporting Role nomination for her role alongside Keira Knightley and James McAvoy in the acclaimed feature. The news coming just days after the Carlow schoolgirl picked up a BAFTA nomination for the same role, as well as a Golden Globe nomination earlier this year.

She will go head to head with Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There), Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) and Ruby Dee (American Gangster), who is seventy years Ronan’s senior.

Daniel Day Lewis received an Actor in a Leading Role nod for Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘There Will Be Blood’. He will compete with George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street), Tommy Lee Jones (In the Valley of Elah) and Viggo Mortenson (Eastern Promises). The Wicklow resident has already picked up a Golden Globe for the role, as well as receiving a BAFTA nomination.

Northern Irishman Seamus Mc Garvey is in the running for an Achievement in Cinematography Oscar for his work on Atonement. Mc Garvey, whose other credits include ‘The Hours’, ‘Sahara’, ‘World Trade Centre’ and ‘High Fidelity’, also picked up a BAFTA nomination last week.

McGarvey is up against Roger Deakins (The Assassination of Jesse James), Janusz Kaminski (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men) and Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood).

‘Once’ is nominated in Achievement in Music (Original Song) category for the song ‘Falling Slowly’, written and performed by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. ‘Once’ will compete with three songs from musical ‘Enchanted’ and one song from Kirsten Sheridan’s ‘August Rush’ for the award.

Irish director Kirsten Sheridan’s feature ‘August Rush’ is nominated in the Achievement in Music -Original Song category.

The ceremony will take place at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Centre. on Sunday February 25th, 2008.
