BAFTA Nominations for Irish Talent
16 Jan 2008 :
Atonement
Irish talent features among this year’s BAFTA Film nominations with actress Saoirse Ronan and cinematographer Seamus McGarvey picking up nods for their work on ‘Atonement’, Daniel Day Lewis among the Best Actor nominees and short films ‘Hesitation’ and ‘The Crumblegiant’ also in the running.

Announced in London on the 16th of January, British film ‘Atonement’ leads the nominations with 14, ‘No Country for Old Men’ and ‘There Will Be Blood’ have each received 9 nominations and foreign language feature ‘La Vie en Rose’ has received 7.

‘Atonement’ has been nominated in the categories Best Film, Best British Film, Director for Joe Wright and Adapted Screenplay among others, with Irish cinematographer Seamus McGarvey getting the nod for his acclaimed work on the film. This is the first BAFTA nomination for the Armagh-born cinematographer, whose other credits include ‘The Hours’, ‘Sahara’, ‘World Trade Centre’ and ‘High Fidelity’.

McGarvey is up against Harris Savides (American Gangster), Oliver Wood (The Bourne Ultimatum), Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men) and Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood).

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan receives the Best Supporting actress nomination, to add to her Golden Globe nomination earlier this year. The thirteen year old is shortlisted among some of the world’s top class actresses, Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There), Kelly MacDonald (No Country for Old Men), Samantha Morton (Control) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton).

Irish short film ‘Hesitation’ compliments its recent Irish Film & Television Awards nomination with another from the British Academy. Written and directed by Virginia Gilbert, the film stars IFTA winning actor Gerard McSorley (Omagh, Middletown).

Animated short film ‘The Crumblegiant’, written and directed by John McCloskey, is among the three titles nominated for Short Animation. The film was produced by Pearse Moore at Raw Nerve Productions and was funded as part of the Frameworks scheme (supported by the Irish Film Board, the Arts Council and RTE).

Finally, Wicklow resident Daniel Day Lewis picks up another nomination for his turn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘There Will Be Blood’. The actor is a front runner to take home the statuette having picked up the Golden Globe in Hollywood last weekend.

Nominations for the Oscars are announced on the 22nd of January 2008.
