London Critics Shortlist Saoirse Ronan & ‘Once’

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan had been nominated for two awards from the London Critics Circle – British Actress in a Supporting Role and British Breakthrough: Acting. John Carney’s ‘Once’ is also in the running for Film of the Year.

Thirteen year old actress Saoirse Ronan will compete against Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix), Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton), Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men) and Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement) for the Supporting Actress gong. While in the British Breakthrough: Acting category, the Carlow schoolgirl is up against Sam Riley (Control), Thomas Turgoose (This is England), Benedict Cumberbatch (Amazing Grace) and Dakota Blue Richards (The Golden Compass).

Dublin-shot film ‘Once’, though an Irish production, is nominated for British Film of the Year. Other films in the category are Anton Corbijn’s ‘Control’, Joe Wright’s ‘Atonement’, David Croneneberg’s ‘Eastern Promises’ and Shane Meadows’ ‘This is England’. Writer/director John Carney is also shortlisted for the British Breakthrough - Filmmaking award.

The other nominees for the British Breakthrough award are Sarah Gavron, director of ‘Brick Lane’, Anton Bornijn director of ‘Control’, Matt Greenhalgh, writer of ‘Control’ and Stevan Riley, writer, director and producer of ‘Blue Blood.

Other contenders for Film of the Year are the Coen brothers’ ‘No Country for Old Men’, ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’, Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘There Will Be Blood’, David Fincher’s ‘Zodiac’ and ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’.

Irish resident Daniel Day-Lewis received a Best Actor nod, and competes with Ulrich Muhe (The Lives of Others), Casey Affleck (The Assassination of Jesse James), George Clooney (Michael Clayton) and Tommy Lee Jones (In the Valley of Elah).

‘Control’ and ‘Atonement’ both picked up eight nominations each.

The London Critics Circle hands out prizes in 14 categories, with the ceremony taking place on February 4th, two days before the British Academy Film Awards, at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.
