A host of Irish acting talent are among the nominations for the 2008 Golden Globes, including Saoirse Ronan, James Nesbitt, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Irish resident Daniel-Day Lewis. Irish shot TV series ‘The Tudors’ is also in line for a Best Television Drama Series award.
Young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan received a Best Actress in a Supporting Role nomination for her role alongside Kiera Knightley in Joe Wright’s ‘Atonement’.
"It feels amazing. Two years ago I wouldn’t have thought anything like this could happen,” she said of her nomination.
Ronan will compete with Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There), Julia Robert’s (Charlie Wilson’s War), Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) for the award.
Northern Irish actor James Nesbitt is in line for Best Actor in a Mini Series or Motion Picture for Television for his role in ‘Jekyll’. He is up against actors Jason Isaacs (The State Within), Jim Broadbent (Longford), Ernest Borgnine (A Grandpa for Christmas) and Adam Beach (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee).
Cork born actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers has received a Best Actor in a Television Series nomination for his role in ‘The Tudors’, while the Irish shot series bagged a Best Television Drama Series nomination. Other actors in the running are Michael C. Hall (Dextor), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Hugh Laurie (House) and Bill Paxton (Big Love).
Daniel-Day Lewis is nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in ‘There Will Be Blood’, competing against George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Denzel Washington (American Gangster), Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) and James McAvoy (Atonement).
Other related nominations include the star of Irish director Neil Jordan’s ‘The Brave One’, Jodie Foster, is in line for a Best Actress award, and Christina Applegate bagged a Best Actress in a Comedy Series nomination for her role in ‘Samantha Who’, penned by Irish writer Cecelia Aherne.
‘Atonement’ topped the list of nominees, receiving seven nominations in total including Best Motion Picture, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Original Score.
‘Michael Clayton’ picked up four nominations, for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.
