Leitrim Adopts Edna O’Brien Adaptation Fest
13 Sep 2007 :
Author Edna O’Brien will be in Leitrim this month (28 – 30 September) for ‘Adaptation: Edna O’Brien on Screen’, a festival of films based on her writing, organized by the IFI and Cinema North-West.

The festival, now in its third year, takes place in the Leitrim town of Dromahair. Fans will have a rare opportunity to see seven screen adaptations of O’Brien’s work in a unique, rural setting.

The Clare-born author’s frank examination of femininity, marriage, sexual politics and Irish society are all reflected in this collection of screen adaptations.

Films include the early television production of ‘The Wedding Dress’, starring Cyril Cusack; 1970s ‘Zee & Co’, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Caine; the coming of age narratives ‘The Girl with Green Eyes’ and ‘The Country Girls’; and ‘The Dazzle’, an animated film for children narrated by Edna O’Brien herself. Several of the films have not been screened since their original release.

Cinema North-West is a mobile cinema project which operates in Sligo and Leitrim County, presenting a year-round programme of world cinema.

The IFI will hold a launch for Adaptation: Edna O’Brien on Screen in the IFI on Monday, 17 September at 6.30pm followed by an Irish Film Archive screening of ‘Zee and Co’.
