International Film Festival Kicks Off In Dublin

The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival kicks off this weekend in Dublin with the premiere of Aussie feature ‘Jindabyne’. Running from the 17 - 25 Feb, special guests arriving for the fest include actors Gabriel Byrne and Ed Burns, directors Shane Meadows and Wim Wenders and producer Jeremy Thomas.

With tickets for the festival selling fast, Dublin braces itself for a two week feast of films produced by Irish and international filmmakers. Actor Gabriel Byrne will attend the Opening Gala on Friday night; while directors Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger and actors Shaun Evans and Lesley Manville will be present for the Closing Gala screening of ‘Sparkle’ on the 25th.

Other highlights include screenings of Irish features ‘Small Engine Repair’, guest director Niall Heery picked up the IFB & NIFTC Breakthrough Talent award at last weeks IFTAs for his writing/directing work on the film. Director John Carney will be on hand to introduce his Sundance winner ‘Once’ and director Steve Hudson and young actress Angel Li will attend the screening of ‘True North’. Irish audiences will have the chance to catch new Irish features ‘WC’ (read IFTN interview with WC director Liam O'Mochain) and ‘Cre Na Cille’ and Irish band The Thrills will attend the screening of their rockumentary at the IFI on the 23rd.

Other international guests include award winning directors Shane Meadows (This Is England), Wim Wenders (Land Of Plenty), producer Kevin Loader and actor Leslie Phillips (Venus), Ed Burns (The Groomsman), Sarah Polley (The Secret Life of Words) and Jeremy Thomas (Fast Food Nation).

Discussion/training events include a ‘Careers In Film’ discussion at the IFI on the 21st with IFTA nominee Taragh Loughrey Grant guiding proceedings alongside Paul McGuirk, Niamh McCaul and IFTA winners Andrew Freedman and Lenny Abrahamson. On Monday the 19th the IFI will host ‘The Actors Studio’ discussion event with journalist Ted Sheey as chair and guests Amy Huberman, Padraic Delaney, Ruth Negga, David Coffey on the panel.
