The following is the Statement issued by RTE following their RTE Authority meeting on Wednesday 27 March 2002.
The RTÉ Authority held a special meeting today, to
receive a progress report from the consultants engaged
in the strategic review process, KPMG and Logical.
Following the presentation, and a discussion with the
consultants, several areas that required further
detailed submissions were identified, and these
submissions, are to be received by the Authority before
the end of April.
Following the meeting the Chairman of the Authority,
Patrick J Wright, said:
"The Authority's decision to embark on a strategic
review was necessitated by the serious financial
situation facing RTÉ. It has proved to be a
particularly timely decision as it will also provide
valuable input for the Forum on Broadcasting,
established by Minister Síle de Valera under the
Chairmanship of Maurice O'Connell.
The Authority's over-riding objective is to ensure that
RTÉ has a secure and financially sustainable future,
which provides the audience with the depth
and breadth of public broadcasting which it requires and
deserves, and the staff with an excellent working
environment.
While awaiting clarification and elaboration of various
points contained in the consultants' presentation, the
Authority will consider the report as a work in
progress. There will be no further comment from the
Authority until it has had time to consider the extra
submissions requested."
