Subotica Films' 'Song for a Raggy Boy' has been chosen for competition at the Sundance Film Festival which runs from 16th to 26th of January 2003.

Based on a true story, Song for a Raggy Boy is the story of one man’s courage to stand up and fight the tough fascist regime in a boys Irish Reformatory School in 1939.

Directed by Aisling Walsh and shot on location in Ballyvournery Co.Cork, the cast is headlined by actor Aidan Quinn (Evelyn, Practical Magic, Legends of The Fall), Iain Glen (Tomb Raider, The Blue Room) and Marc Warren (Band of Brothers).

Financed by the Irish Film Board, The Danish Film Institute, Lola Films, Zentropa and Eurimages, Song for a Raggy Boy is a multilateral co-production between Subotica Entertainment in Ireland, Moviefan in Denmark, Zoma Films UK and Lola Films in Spain.

Tristan Orpen Lynch from Subotica gave his reaction to the announcement “We have made an truly powerful and significant film and the recognition from Sundance is a very positive indicator of the future for Irish film and its value on a national and international level. This is a small feature film but is another example of how Ireland’s film industry is gearing up to compete on a larger global level.”

The annual Sundance film festival, which was originally founded by Robert Redford, is world-renowned as a showcase for the best in new independent cinema. This year, over 2000 feature films were submitted to the festival programmers with approximately 40 international films making it to the final selection. SONG FOR A RAGGY BOY has been chosen for the high profile ‘World Cinema’ section of the festival.

“This is excellent news for the Irish film industry as Sundance is an important fixture on the international festival circuit. Indeed, Bloody Sunday, scooped the Audience award at this year’s Sundance so to have yet another Irish film in competition in next year’s festival is a major coup”, said Rod Stoneman, CEO Irish Film Board.

Subotica was set up in 1999 by producers Tristan Orpen Lynch and Dominic Wright along with Ardmore Sound’s Paul Moore and financial consultant David Cooke. In 2001, the company produced the eight part period drama Random Passage starring Colm Meaney and Aoife McMahon for RTE and CBC, which recently won two Gemini Awards (the Canadian ‘Emmys’) for best actress and cinematography. Subotica also produced the feature films Night Train starring John Hurt and Brenda Blethyn and On the Nose starring Robbie Coltrane and Dan Aykroyd.
