Due to an overwhelming demand from exhibitors across Ireland, Eclipse Pictures have requested a further 10 prints of Mel Gibson’s controversial movie “The Passion Of The Christ” in addition to the 50 prints already available.
Eclipse managing director Niamh McCaul has said that the growing demand is due to a combination of factors, from the overwhelming success of the film around the world over the past week since its release and the added interest from religious and community groups around the country. Eclipse Pictures has opened a telephone line to deal with enquiries, such is the interest from the general public.
It was initially thought by critics that film’s religious themes, violent scenes and subtitles would deter cinemagoers, Mel Gibson has even described the movie as a possible “career killer” but box office takings in the US since it’s release would prove that this is not the case. The film cost $27 million to make but has already taken a staggering $117.5million in its first five days of release.
The trailer is currently running in almost 200 screens nationwide, and is due for release on March 12. The film is rated 15PG.
