Following the enormous success of last year's festival, the Tricycle is
delighted to announce their continuing collaboration with Ballygowan Pure
Irish Water for a second year in a week-long celebration of the best of
Irish film (26th April - 2nd May 2002).
The festival features a wide-ranging programme of pioneering short films,
documentaries, animated and feature films, many of which will receive their
International premieres. The Ballygowan Irish film festival showcases the
history and politics which have shaped Ireland. This unique event also
gives audiences the opportunity to attend Q & A sessions and Gala Night
screenings with key directors and cast.
The week will open with The Abduction Club directed by Stefan Schwartz,
starring Liam Cunningham and Alice Evans. Other highlights
include Les Blair's much anticipated H3, and the Oscar* nominated short film
Give Up Your Aul Sins. The programme also includes Gary Mitchell's
explosive film As The Beast Sleeps which flanks exciting features such as
How Harry Became A Tree starring Colm Meaney and directed by Goran
Paskalijevic, John Carney's On the Edge starring Stephen Rea; Lance Daly's
directorial debut Last Days in Dublin; Paloma Baeza's The Watchmen and the
critically acclaimed Endgame directed by Conor McPherson and starring
Michael Gambon and David Thewlis.
A series of after-show discussions will give audiences an opportunity to
hear and meet some of the many directors and performers involved. Special
appearances will be made by Jimmy McGovern (Sunday, Cracker, Hillsborough
and Liam) on 27 April and Jim Sheridan (Bloody Sunday, In the Name of the
Father and My Left Foot) on 28 April. On 30 April Patrick Bergin (Sleeping
with the Enemy, When the Sky Falls) will introduce the screening of Some
Other Place, based on three poems by W.B Yeats, directed by Paula
Fraser-Bergin.
The festival sponsor Ballygowan Pure Irish Water in association with Arts
and Business New Partners have also sponsored a short film competition for
schools and student filmmakers; winning entries will be screened on the
opening gala night and throughout the festival.
