'Bloody Sunday' directed by Paul Greengrass, has won the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance last week. Below are all of the winners in the Independent Feature Film Competition.
The Documentary Grand Jury Prize was given to DAUGHTER FROM DANANG, directed by Gail Dolgin & Vicente Franco and produced by Gail Dolgin. The Dramatic Grand Jury Prize was presented to PERSONAL VELOCITY, directed by Rebecca Miller and produced by Gary Winick, Lemore Syvan & Alexis Alexanian. The Grand Jury Prize is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC.
The Documentary Audience Award was presented to AMANDLA! A REVOLUTION IN FOUR PART HARMONY, directed by Lee Hirsch and produced by Lee Hirsch & Sherry Simpson. The Dramatic Audience Award winner was REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES, directed by Patricia Cardoso and coproduced by George LaVoo & Effie T. Brown. The Audience Awards, sponsored by Entertainment Weekly, are given to a documentary and a dramatic film in Competition or American Spectrum, as voted by Film Festival audiences.
The World Cinema Audience Award was given to both BLOODY SUNDAY, directed by Paul Greengrass and produced by Mark Redhead and THE LAST KISS, directed by Gabriele Muccino and produced by Domenico Procacci. The World Cinema Audience Award, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, is given to a film in the World Cinema category as voted by Film Festival audiences.
The Directing Award recognizes excellence in directing for dramatic and documentary features. The Documentary Directing Award went to Rob Fruchtman & Rebecca Cammisa for SISTER HELEN. The Dramatic Directing Award was presented to Gary Winick for TADPOLE.
The Excellence in Cinematography Award honors exceptional photography in both a dramatic and documentary film at the Film Festival. Daniel B. Gold for BLUE VINYL from the Documentary Competition and Ellen Kuras for PERSONAL VELOCITY from the Dramatic Competition received the 2002 Cinematography Award.
The Freedom of Expression Award is given to a documentary film that informs and educates the public on issues of social or political concern. The Documentary Jury awarded the Freedom of Expression Award to AMANDLA! A REVOLUTION IN FOUR PART HARMONY, directed by Lee Hirsch and produced by Lee Hirsch & Sherry Simpson. The Freedom of Expression Award is sponsored by The Playboy Foundation.
The Dramatic Jury presents the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award to outstanding achievement in writing. The 2002 prize was given to Gordy Hoffman for LOVE LIZA. The award is sponsored by the Utah Film Commission.
The Documentary Jury bestowed a Special Jury Prize to HOW TO DRAW A BUNNY, directed by John Walter and produced by Andrew Moore and to SENORITA EXTRAVIADA, directed & produced by Lourdes Portillo.
The Dramatic Jury bestowed a Special Jury Prize for Originality to SECRETARY, directed by Steven Shainberg and produced by Steven Shainberg, Andrew Fierberg & Amy Hobby. The Dramatic Jury gave a Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Cast to Frankie G., Leo Minaya, Manuel Cabral, Hector Gonzalez, Julissa Lopez, Jessica Morales, & Panchito Gomez in MANITO. The Jury also presented a Special Jury Prize for Acting to America Ferrera & Lupe Ontiveros in REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES.
The Latin American Jury awarded the Jury Prize in Latin American Cinema to THE TRESPASSER, directed by Beto Brant and produced by Renato Ciasca & Bianca Villar. The Jury Prize in Latin American Cinema is sponsored by The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
The Shorts Jury presented the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking to GASLINE, directed by Dave Silver. The Shorts Jury awarded Honorable Mentions in Short Filmmaking to BUS 44, directed by Dayyan Eng, DROWNING LESSONS, directed by Gregory Kennedy, MORNING BREATH, directed by Brin Hill, NO DUMB QUESTIONS, directed by Melissa Regan, THE PARLOR, directed by Geoffrey Haley, and STUCK, directed by Jamie Babbit. The Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking is sponsored by American Express.
The 2002 Documentary Competition Jury was comprised of Jeffrey Friedman, Jytte Jensen, Stanley Nelson, Alanis Obomsawin, and Frances Reid.
The Dramatic Competition jurors for 2002 were Brad Anderson, Patricia Arquette, Matthew Libatique, Anne Thompson, and John Waters.
The Latin American jurors were Nuria Bronfman, Alfonso Cuaron, and Andrucha Waddington.
The Shorts Jury was comprised of Jenni Olson, Alan Oxman, and Jeffrey Sharp.
The Sundance Online Film Festival Viewers Awards went to CARNY TALES, by Scott Smith (New Forms), GUERRILLA NEWS NETWORK: CRACK THE CIA, by Stephen Marshall (Live Action), and KARMA GHOST, by Billy Blob (Animation).
The Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award was created to honor and support emerging filmmakers with their next screenplays – one each from the United States, Europe, Latin America and Japan – who possess the originality, talent and vision to be celebrated as we look to the future of international cinema. The winning filmmakers and projects are: THE BLEATING OF SHEEP, Gjergj Xhuvani (Europe), CRONICAS, Sebastian Cordero (Latin America), THE SLEEP DEALER, Alex Rivera (United States), and THE MAN WHO WIPES MIRRORS, Seisoku Kajita (Japan).
