Celtic Development Funding
27 Jul 2000 :
A total of £50,650 was awarded to Welsh/Irish companies in the fourth round of the Celtic Development Fund, whose panel met on the 7th July 2000.

The Fund was set up last year to provide funding for the development of television co-production projects by companies that are based within the Interreg zone - Gwynedd and Dyfed in Wales and the nine East Coast counties in the Irish Republic. The area receives European Union support for economic and cultural partnerships through the Interreg Fund. The Celtic Development Fund is co-financed by the Welsh Development Agency and administered by Sgrin and Film Makers Ireland.

The deadline for the last round of awards from the Fund is August 31 2000.

Four awards were made by the panel, for projects to develop a children's animation series, a children's drama series, a documentary series and a drama series.

The following projects received funding:

Shackleton Road - an 11 x 26' children's animation series, to be co-produced by Cyberium, based in Corris, and Dublin-based Brown Bag Development Ltd. The series is primarily aimed at 6-11 year olds and aims to bring a new level of comic ingenuity to children's animation series. Set in a simple street, Shackleton Road deals with the day-to-day events that surround any one of five children, with the warmth, friendship, tension and rivalries you'd expect from people who spend most of their days together. The project was awarded £20,000.

Wild Gypsy Dream - a 3 x 60' documentary co-production from Boda Cyf of Llandovery and Hummingbird Productions Ltd. This series celebrates gypsy and traveller culture from the arrival of the first gypsies in Wales in the 18th century to the present day. It tells of people's fascination with gypsy life and their romantic notions about the gypsy existence, and at the same time explores the other side of the coin - the bigotry and intolerance towards gypsies and travellers. The project was awarded £10,650.

The Winter Palace - a 6 x 52' drama series from Antena Cyf, based in Caernarfon and Cardiff, and Coco Television of Dublin. The series revolves around the interplay between a group of young people living in London who win a decrepit nightclub in rural Ireland. At present aimless, urban, dissatisfied with their lot, the club is their chance for dramatic change. Group loyalties develop and change as they try to realise a shared dream. The project was awarded £10,000.

Geronimo - a 6 x 30' children's drama from Caernarfon-based, Stiwdio Capel Mawr and Dublin-based Crimson Films. The project aims to adopt the style and verve of children's comics with their mischief-making heroes like Dennis the Menace, with sharply drawn characters playing out the eternal comic battle between children and adults. The project was awarded £10,000.
