Minister Acts on Digital TV
30 Mar 2000 :
The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, Sile deValera, has reaffirmed that she is committed to consulting widely with interested parties to assist in the process of advancing Digital Terrestrial Television.

In recent weeks the Minister has met representatives of the RTE Authority and senior management, the RTE Trade Union Group and the RTE Network Employees likely to transfer to the new DTT entity. Following her meetings with the employees, the Minister invited Mr. Phil Flynn to facilitate the consultative process with RTE to ensure that there is a common understanding amongst the parties involved within RTE of :

  • the public policy objective of Government to be realised and the factors that must be considered in the achievement of that objective
  • the difficulties that have arisen in the development of a transaction structure
  • the parameters within which the process can move forward

The facilitator's task will be to promote such a common understanding in order to facilitate the presentation of information to Minister deValera of the positions of these parties on the establishment of a DTT entity. The Minister said that she was delighted that Mr. Flynn accepted the invitation to act in this capacity and believes that his involvement should be of considerable assistance in moving the process forward.

The Minister hopes that the task can be completed in three weeks, after which Mr. Flynn will report to her.
