Dublin Film Festival

At a press launch yesterday evening (24/3/99) at Virgin Cinemas, Programme Director, Maretta Dillon, announced details of the 14th Dublin Film Festival programme, which runs from 15 - 25 April.

Introducing the programme Maretta Dillon said that "The 14th Dublin Film Festival offers a rich and varied selection of screen titles from around the world. Featuring over 170 films in 11 day from 35 countries, the Festival will open and close with World Premieres of two new Irish films. In between the Festival will present the best of world cinema - this year with a European slant."

The Festival has just completed a complete revamp with a new management team, a new Principle Sponsor, Miller Genuine Draft, a new core venue, Virgin Cinemas, and a new date".

The 14th Dublin Film Festival is anticipating the attendance of the following luminaries from the international film industry: Bernardo Bertolucci, Olivier Assayas, Fiona Shaw, Neil Jordan, John Lynch, John Shea, Ian McKellen, Mike Figgis and Chris Menges.

The Festival will highlight the following seasons:

OPENING FILM - April 15, 1999

The World Premiere of Cathal Blacks new Irish film LOVE AND RAGE starring Greta Scacchi, Daniel Craig, Valerie Edmond and Donal Donnelly.

CLOSING FILM - April 25, 1999

The World Premiere of Deborah Warner's THE LAST SEPTEMBER starring Fiona Shaw, Lambert Wilson, Keeley Hawes, Gary Lydon, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Jane Birkin, based on the book by Elisabeth Bowen from a script by John Banville.

FESTIVAL RETROSPECTIVES

Bernardo Bertolucci - the celebrated Italian filmmaker attends the festival for a retrospective of his work including BEFORE THE REVOLUTION, THE CONFORMIST< THE SPIDERS STRATAGEM, LAST TANGO IN PARIS, THE SHELTERING SKY, THE LAST EMPEROR and his latest film BESIEGED starring David Thewlis and Thandie Newton.

Bernardo Bertolucci will participate in a public interview on Sunday, April 25 in Virgin Cinemas with Irish Times critic, Michael Dwyer.

Oliver Assayas - The French writer/director Olivier Assayas who has been making films since 1986 will attend for a complete retrospective of his work. The festival is perticularly pleased that we will be able to show his complete works as only one of his films, IRMA VEP, has entered UK/Irish distribution so far.

Olivier Assayas will discuss his work with filmmaker Martin Mahon on Saturday. April 24 at Virgin Cinemas.

CINEMA IRELAND

The festival will screen the World Premieres of PARK - directed by John Carney and Tom Hall and starring Des Nealon and Claudia Terry - and MAKING ENDS MEET directed by Declan Recks. The latest SHORT CUTS series will be premiered, as well as the first Dublin screenings of John Lynch's NIGHT TRAIN with John Hurt and Brenda Blethyn and Joe O'Byrne's PETE'S METEOR starring Brenda Fricker, Mike Myers and Dervla Kirwan.

The Irish shorts programme also continues with new films from young directors.

FIRST FILM EUROPE

This strand aims to profile new work from emerging European filmmakers. Highlights include Charles McDougall's first film HEART, starring Saskia Reeves and Christopher Eccleston from a script by Jimmy McGovern; GET REAL directed by Simon Shore; THE TICHBORNE CLAIMANT directed by David Yates and starring Sir John Gielgud, Stephen Fry and Rachael Dowling; LIVING IN PARADISE (Winner of the Best First Film at Venice last year) directed by Bourlem Guerdjou; and Karim Traida's very moving THE POLISH BRIDE.

SPIRIT OF AMERICA

The popular strand continues with SOUTHIE, set in South Boston and directed by John Shea who is expected to attend the festival; BROKEN VESSELS, a first feature from Scott Ziehl; Nancy Savoca's look at motherhood in 90's; THE 24 HOUR WOMAN and Irish director Martin Duffy's second feature THE BUNBLEBEE FLIES ANYWAY.

EUROPE IN FOCUS

Includes new films from directors Julio Medem LOVERS IN THE ARTIC CIRCLE, Fernando Trueba's THE GIRL OF YOUR DREAMS and Carlos Saura's TANGO as well as new director Santiago Segura with TORRENTE, THE DUMB ARM OF THE LAW.

DOCUMENTARY PROGRAMME

Director Ron Havilio's six hour documentary on Jerusalem, FRAGMENTS JERUSALEM will be screened over two nights at the IFC with the director in attendance. The Festival will also screen the World Premiere of Lionel Mill's film US BOYS, set in the Glens of Antrim. Christopher Swann's documentary on Sean Ó Riada A VERTICAL MAN will also be shown. A special feature of the documentary season will be the amazing STATE OF DOGS.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

The Irish Premiere of Neil Jordan's IN DREAMS starrin Annette Bening, Robert Downey Jr, Aidan Quinn and Stephen Rea.

Lodge Kerrigans's exploration of an Irish prostitute in New York CLAIRE DOLAN, strarring Katrin Cartlidge and Colm Meany; WEST BEIRUT, Ziad Doueiri's look at the beginning of the troubles in Beirut through the eyes of two teenage boys; Mario Martone's individual response to the war in Yugoslavia REHERSALS FOR WAR; Goran Paskaljevic's THE POWDER KEG; Emir Kusturica's gypsy odyssey BLACK CAT, WHITE CAT; Palm d'Or Winner ETERNITY AND A DAY; John Curran's endearing first feature PRAISE ; David Cronenberg's playful eXistenZ; Canadian Don McKellar's original spin on Earth's LAST NIGHT; Sam Raimi's chilling A SIMPLE PLAN; Stephen Frear's evocative THE HI-LO COUNTRY and Woody Allen's thoughtful take on fame in CELEBRITY, starring Leonardo di Caprio.

Asian cinema is represented by Stanley Kwan's HOLD ME TIGHT, Shinya Tsukamoto's BULLET BALLET and Kwangmo Lee's SPRING IN MY HOME TOWN among others.

HOLLYWOOD ICONS 2

This year the work of actress Veronica Lake and Lauren Bacall feature in 4 double bills screening at the UCI Cinemas in Blanchardstown, Coolock and Tallaght. Films include THE BIG SLEEP, THE BLUE DAHLIA, WRITTEN ON THE WIND and DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID

SEMINARS, FORUMS AND INDUSTRY EVENTS

The Festival will host two seminars looking at issues around the screening of new Irish Cinema; GREEN ON THE SCREEN questions how and where we see Irish films on screen while the FILM FESTIVAL SEMINAR examines the proliferation of film festivals.

In addition:

- Producer/scriptwriter Britt Harrison will give a seminar for young writers - presented in association with Filmbase

- Director Mike Figgis will host a Masterclass for writers/directors co-ordinated by MEDIA Desk.

- The Short Cuts seminar will look at the experience for participants in the Short Cuts series and is present in association with the Irish Film Board.

- IMAGES OF DISABILITY will examine the representations of Disabled People on Screen following the screening of DANCE ME TO MY SONG directed by Rolf de Heer and is presented in association with LIGHTS DISABILITY ACTION GROUP.
