The Big Picture 2001 focuses on Digital Dividends

Enterprise Ireland’s Internationally Traded Services division, in conjunction with IBEC will run a digital media seminar, on Friday 23 November, in the Leopardstown Pavilion, Leopardstown Racecourse, Dublin 18 from 8.30 – 4.00pm, on future trends and performance of the international digital media industry, focusing on the development of the Irish digital media sector in particular.

Irish companies are facing many challenges in the current rapidly changing environment. This seminar aims to address the priority issues for the development of the industry going forward. Digital media impacts across all industries and offers new opportunities to companies with imagination and vision.

It creates new opportunities for the software and media sector and the adoption of digital media as an enabling technology is affecting music, film, TV, animation, publishing, asset management, media software and applications.

The seminar will give an opportunity to discuss key issues:
- Profitability through digital production
- Opportunities in the digital media space
- Emerging / successful business models
- Planning for growth in digital media

Speakers at the seminar will include Jim Bannister – Banister served as Chief Development Officer and Executive Vice President of Warner Bros. Online and Entertaindom.com. and Director of multimedia and post-production for Steven Spielsberg’s “Survivors of the Shoah Visual History project”.

Speakers:

Jim Banister - Most recent work is on cross-media programming projects, especially those that marry electronic games with television. Mr Banister was also a founding partner in Windsor Digital, a closely held private company that co-founded by partners Terry Semel, former Co-Chairman of Warner Bros.; Jim Moloshok, Mr. Banister and Jeff Weiner, creators and former management of Warner Bros. The trio of Banister, Moloshok and Weiner created and ran Warner Bros. Online and Time Warner's entertainment portal "Entertaindom". Mr. Banister served as Chief Development Officer and Executive Vice President of Warner Bros. Online and Entertaindom.com.

Joshua Rosen, Founder of Real Media, global provider of interactive technology and solutions with more than 8 years experience of high tech software development and interactive media services including the successful launch and pan-European rollout of DTV software applications and related solutions.

Walter Hobbs, Director, Dublin based VC firm ACT which was founded as an independent operation in 1994, and has completed over 45 investments principally in technology based companies serving global markets. ACT's portfolio consists of a significant number of technology investments across software, communications and internet technology as well as the more traditional development capital and buyout investments. A number of technology investments have been made outside Ireland ACT have successfully supported Ireland's first National, commercial, independent television network; TV3 and broadband digital communications company Massana).

Andy Ruane, MD Like It Love It Productions, owner of the Anner Media Group, and currently launching Ireland Live Television, 24/7 internet tv channel. Like It Love It is known for the creation and development of music and entertainment formats including the tv series The Lyrics Board, which is currently on air in 19 countries.

Andy Barmer, Director, New Media, The Mill, UK The Mill is one of the largest, most respected and broad ranging providers of digital content in the world. Founded in 1990 as a technology based creative service, The Mill produces content for advertising across all existing, new media and broadband platforms. Mill Film was launched in 1997 to concentrate on visual effects for film and four years later won a visual effects Oscar for work on Ridley Scott’s Roman epic, Gladiator.

Richard Freudenstein, Chief Operating Officer, BskyB British Sky Broadcasting is a leading provider of sports, movies, entertainment and news - whose channels are received by over 10 million households in the UK and Ireland. The launch of the UK's first digital television service, Sky digital, on 1 October 1998, signaled the start of a new era in British broadcasting. It remains the fastest, most successful rollout of any digital TV service in Europe, attracting 5.3 million customers at the end of June 2001. Richard Freudenstein joined BSkyB in October 1999 as General Manager reporting to Chief Executive Officer, Tony Ball. In October 2000 Richard was promoted to Chief Operating Officer. His brief includes responsibility for all DTH Satellite Operations (including customer service, field operations and logistics), new product development, joint ventures and managing Sky’s commercial relationships with channel suppliers, cable operators and other third parties. Richard joined BSkyB from FOXTEL, where he was Director of Operations and Business Development. Prior to that he was Director of Legal & Business Affairs, and worked at FOXTEL since its inception.

Gerald Adams, Co-founder and CTO, Vision Consulting Gerald Adams is one of the founders of VISION and the company’s leading technological innovator. He continually advances his conceptual innovations and software designs skills, resulting in technological breakthroughs for clients. Gerald is a technologist who is firmly rooted in business realities and practicalities. Clients appreciate his ability to translate technology into the language of business and value his short-timescale approach of technology delivery. He has lead strategic technology projects for telephone and internet banks, new systems architectures and internet ventures. He has achieved significant results for companies such as: TheStreet.com, Swiss Bank Corp, Bank of Ireland, Dime Bank of New York and Citibank. Working with Warner Music Group, Gerald headed the team that created a new publishing model for the entertainment industry, which allows it to promote and break new artists on the internet in a timely and effective manner. Gerald holds a degree in engineering and mathematics from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, and extra-curricular passions include art, anthropology and history.
