The Darklight Digital Film Festival which will be held in May 1999 was launched on Wedensday 11th of November at the Arthouse Multimedia Centre in Temple Bar Dublin. The festival is now accepting entries up until the deadline of 12 March 1999.
Darklight is the first festival of its kind to be staged in this country, being dedicated solely to the use of new developments in digital technology in film and animation. This convergence of art and technology will take place in Dublin in an effort to heighten the awareness of the public towards digital as a new method of filmmaking. Sink is involved in the Darklight film festival in order to give Irish artists who are working in the realm of digital film, video and 3D animation a unique opportunity to exhibit their work. The festival welcomes into Ireland international artists working in this exciting new medium and aims to gather together a body of work that will promote Ireland as being at the forefront of digital technology. Amongst the main supporters are Arthouse, 44k, Light Surgeons, Protein TV, the Onedotzero festival, and many other groups and individuals in the film and digital media industry.
The festival is designed to showcase the innovative and progressive work of filmmakers and graphic artists from around the world, with particular emphasis on the work being produced in Ireland. It will be accompanied by a week long exhibition presented in Arthouse Multimedia Centre for the Arts, which will provide the space for video installations, as well as computer-aided and interactive productions. Six screenings in two days will be divided between short films, 3D animations and special effects sequences as well as experimental music videos. The future of digital film will be explored in a seminar comprised of artists, filmmakers and technical experts who will show their work and speak about their experience with the medium.Darklight plans to bring together the talents of both amateurs and professionals from varied backgrounds such as filmmaking, graphic design, animation and music, who are using computer technology in their work. The aim of Darklight is to create an arena for digital artists to showcase personal and professional pieces. Darklight will be a visually exciting showcase of the latest in digital film.
Eligibility:
The Darklight Digital Film Festival is an independent festival organised for filmmakers with an active role in digital technology. The festival shall encompass innovative/experimental works in the fields of film, animation and music video. The festival is open to experiments, to the extraordinary, to all those working methods which, using the most diverse media, create radical worlds of symbols and signs in today's digital age. Filmmakers, video artists, computer-graphic designers, animators and TV artists apply within.
Requirements:
For entry level they accept only: Quicktime movie on CD at broadcast quality, VHS and BETA MAX. Each entry must be accompanied by an entry form, an e-mail/disk synopsis (maximum 90 words), and a still if available, in bitmap or jpg format. If you wish to receive an acknowledgement of your entry, please include a stamped, self-addressed postcard. If you wish return of your tape or CD, please include a postage paid, self-addressed mailing envelope.
