Galway Film Fleadh Line-Up
06 Jun 2002 :
The 14th Galway Film Fleadh will present a veritable feast of cinema from 9th to 14th July. Showcasing a multicultural movie melting pot of more than 70 features, shorts, animated film and documentaries, the Fleadh represents the best of independent screenings in world cinema.

The Fleadh is delighted to welcome and pay tribute to AIDAN QUINN as their special guest during this year's festival. One of the most established and successful Irish actors in the world today, Aidan Quinn had originally set his sights on becoming a roofer. However in 1978, aged 19, Quinn discovered acting and made his stage debut later that year in Chicago. In 1984 he made his feature film debut in Reckless and came to prominence following the success of the 1985 Desperately Seeking Susan, which co-starred Madonna. Aidan has rarely been off our screens since and will be divulging the fruits of his experience at the Actors Masterclass during the Fleadh. He will also be taking part in our Public Interview, where members of the public get the opportunity to meet him in person.

The Galway Film Fleadh is honoured to be paying tribute to one of cinema's leading filmmakers with a retrospective of the films of MIRA NAIR - the renowned Indian Director. Nair, who will be in Galway for the Fleadh, will present a selection of her work and will give the annual Director's Masterclass. Nair's work, along with Indian cinema in general, has slowly seeped into the consciousness of the West and, when you consider that India produces more films annually than any other country in the world, this season has been long overdue. Not unlike the season of Iranian cinema that featured strongly on last year's Fleadh programme, Indian cinema has been allowed to develop away from the glare of Hollywood and retains a freshness and vitality sadly lacking in more 'polished' western fare.

Mira Nair has long been a leading light of Asian cinema. Having left her native Bhuvaneshwar to study sociology at Harvard in 1976, Nair soon became intrigued with film, and began experimenting with the documentary format - thereby allowing her to marry her interest in the study of human nature with that of film. Throughout her work we see explorations of race, colour, social strata, poverty and how these imposed conditions shape people's lives. Her critically acclaimed debut feature Salaam Bombay , which was nominated for a 'Best Foreign Film' Academy Award, brought Nair to the attention of the world's film-making community in 1988. She continued to exercise her critical eye on inter-racial issues when making Mississippi Masala, a cautionary tale of love between an Indian-American girl and an African-American man, played by Denzel Washington.

Nair more recently hit the headlines for her celebration of Indian matrimonial custom in Monsoon Wedding, which she refers to as "The love song to my home city." However, this film came very close to tragedy - having had footage destroyed while being shipped from Delhi to New York, Nair was forced to re-shoot three scenes, while a fourth was digitally enhanced. Despite these trials, Monsoon Wedding went on to secure for Nair the respected Golden Lion award at the Berlin Film Festival - the first such awarded to a woman. This is just a sample of the rich vein of Indian cinema that will be presented at this year's Fleadh along with Asif Kapadia's The Warrier, Pan Nalin's Samsara and his documentary Ayurveda and a rare screening of the masterful Pather Panchali by Satyajit Ray. Having worked closely with Nair on a number of productions, we have invited DECLAN QUINN to present a Cinematography Masterclass during the Fleadh also.

The Galway Film Fleadh has consistently brought the best in World Cinema to Galway, and this year will be no exception. Already confirmed are a number of films from Poland, Canada, North America, Kurdistan, Iran, Bosnia and Finland, including the Oscar-nominated Elling and Tony Gatlif's Swing. They will also be featuring a selection of new cinema from Spain.

Closer to home, the fleadh will be showcasing new Irish talent among the many features, shorts, documentaries, and animated films taking part in this year's Fleadh including the long-awaited premiere of Geraldine Creed's Chaos and a screening of Terence Ryan's Puckoon. We will also be hosting the first theatrical screening of Paul Greengrass' controversial Bloody Sunday as well as Justin McCarthy's new documentary on Sein Fein MP, Gerry Adams. As the Beast Sleeps, a new feature from Harry Bradbeer which examines the ever-changing political situation in Northern Ireland, will also be screened.

As part of its time honoured tradition, the Fleadh will host a strong series of debates, workshops and masterclasses, while the Fleadh Fair continues to build on its success as an effective meeting ground for Irish film-makers with film financiers, sales agents and distributors from around the world.
