«The Factual Boom: Getting the Right Gear for the Genre»

When cameramen were able to take 16 mm. cameras off the tripod and shoot “cinema direct” a new genre of documentaries was born. Some called it “cinema verité”. Whatever the name, it was a revolution. Another revolution is taking place with the coming of digital technology. Cameras can do more wondrous things than ever before, and this technology, as well as creation of specialty television channels, has produced a huge boom in factual programming. This year MIPDOC will explore this phenomenon from the standpoint of “the gear”. Factual producers are using everything from IMAX and HDTV, to tiny cameras that can literally travel inside the human body. Of course, their choices depend upon the story they are telling. Do you want macro-photography, micro-photography, surveillance cameras, 16 x 9, whatever? Producers must select the right gear for their story, be that on land, underwater, in space, at night, inside a living organism or fixed to some other object. Some of the world’s best producers will show their work and discuss the decisions they made about “the right gear for the genre”.

Moderator: Pat Ferns, President and CEO, Banff Television Festival (Canada)

MIPNET CASE STUDY

“Multi-Platform Production: More Opportunity, More Expense. More Profitable?

Consider the ‘Pop Idol’ Case … “

Around 10,000 hopefuls have signed-up to take part in one of the most exciting TV talent contests ever. There can only be one winner! Welcome to "Pop Idol", the quest for 2002's solo superstar!

With various attached revenue sources, this international TV entertainment format model, created by FremantleMedia, doing extremely well in the UK at the moment on terrestrial and digital channels, is put under scrutiny. Four to five executives who are connected to this particular program are questioned on their specific areas of responsibility and the multi-platform opportunities. These same executives are responsible for the following: original creation and local production of the TV program, implementation and management of a call centre and interactive and/or Internet elements, branding of a CD, and star agency management.

MIPTV conference - Pitching session

“Revelation of Future Formats!”

A special event dedicated to formats, a rare opportunity to discover the trends in tomorrow’s TV programs! Presented as a pitching session, this event gives international producers the opportunity to show the “formatable” potential of their programs. All the programs presented were carefully selected by IMCA through NOTA, the international program monitoring service developed in partnership with Médiamétrie. The criteria applied for the choice of these programs are the originality of their concept, the identifiable and adaptable character of their structure and their capacity to be adapted to a wide audience; in short, a conjunction of structuring factors liable to guarantee international success. Already broadcast in their country of origin, the five presented programs have produced good ratings from their very first screenings and have not yet been adapted to other markets. They are bound to include the new successes of the future!

Session co-organised in partnership with IMCA, with the support of New On The Air. Nota is developed by IMCA, EURODATA TV and MEDIAMETRIE.
