Rhys-Meyers Scoops Golden Globe

Irish actor Jonathan Rhys-Meyers has won the Award for Best Actor in a Mini Series/TV Movie for his role as Elvis at the 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles.

The star studded event held in LA took place on the 16th of January 2006. Voted for by the for by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the

Globes honours both film and television productions.

Rhys-Meyers was nominated alongside fellow Irishman Kenneth Branagh for the coveted award with Bill Nighy (The Girl in the Café), Donald Sutherland (Human Trafficking) and Ed Harris (Empire Falls).

Other Irish hopefuls Cillian Murphy (Breakfast On Pluto) and Pierce Brosnan (The Matador) lost out to Joaquin Phoenix for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Award. Phoenix won for his performance as Johnny Cash in the biopic ‘Walk the Line’ and his co-star Reese Witherspoon also scooped the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Cash’s wife June Carter.

Ang Lee’s cowboy drama ‘Brokeback Mountain’ led the field of winners with four awards; Best Director, Best Drama, Best Screenplay and Best Song.
