‘Undressing My Mother’ Wins European Academy Award
05 Dec 2005 :

Undressing My Mother

Ken Wardrop’s short film ‘Undressing My Mother’ has won the European Film Academy Short Film Prix 2005 Award at the EFA’s held in Berlin on the 3rd of December 2005.

The Irish short film qualified for entry to the EFA’s after it won the Best Documentary Award

at the Tampere Film Festival in Finland earlier this year. It was pipped against twelve of the best short films in Europe that qualified as winners of the other Prix short film festivals. Over 1,600 members of the European Film Academy voted to decided the overall winner.

‘Undressing My Mother’ is a Venom Film production directed by Ken Wardrop and produced by Andrew Freedman. The film was their graduate film from the IADT National Film School in Dun Laoghaire and this award is the 24th for the film having previously picked up, amongst others, the Irish Film & Television Award for Best Short Film in 2004 and the Audience Award For Best International Short at the Cork Film Festival.

The young filmmakers attended the gala event which also saw screen legend Sir Sean Connery pick up a Lifetime Achievement Award. The biggest winner on the night was Michael Haneke’s film ‘Caché (Hidden)’ which won five awards including the Best European Film and Best European Director awards. Rupert Gregson-Williams & Andrea Guerra won the European Composer 2005 award for Terry George’s ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and George Clooney’s ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ won the EFA Non European Film Award.

The director, Ken Wardrop said “We are delighted with this latest award and put the success of this film down to the exquisite humour and wonderful honesty of the film’s character, my mother.” Andrew Freedman added that he believed “the academy’s choice was in recognition of the films creative manner in which the frank visuals and content work in harmony and respect.”
