Lifetime Achievement Winner David Kelly

The Irish Film & Television Awards show, broadcast live on Saturday the 5th November, attracted an audience of 645,000 viewers, with an average at 587,000 throughout the programme (44.3% audience share) – the highest ratings to date.

CEO of the Irish Film and Television Awards, Áine Moriarty believes, “To recognise and be proud of Irish achievement with these awards is very important as it offers encouragement, public recognition and a benchmark for the standards that the Irish themselves are setting for the future.”

Commenting on the Awards, Minister John O’Donoghue said, “The IFTA Awards are a wonderful demonstration of our enthusiasm for film, our appetite for imaginative productions and our commitment as a nation to this dynamic and brilliant industry. From acting categories to costume design and from cinematography to animation, all areas of Irish filmmaking talent were celebrated.”

Members of the prestigious jury who had deliberated over the winners of each category and were very impressed by the high standards of entries right across the board also attended. Jury members included the producer of Fever Pitch, High Fidelity and Donnie Brasco Alan Greenspan, Hollywood actor Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek, Ocean's 11 and Cruel Intentions), Oscar winning cinematographer Jack Cardiff, Hollywood Orchestrator Conrad Pope, writer/director Bill Forsyth, Philip Edgar Jones, producer of Big Brother, The Salon and Shattered, Oscar nominated actress Brenda Blythn, Academy Award winner Cedomir Kolar, and producer Nic Powell. Dorothy Byrne (Head of News at Channel 4), Chair of the Current Affairs Jury declared the nominations "world class films". All of the Irish broadcasters were represented on the Jury. Irish jurors also included acclaimed director John Moore, Roddy Doyle, David Collins, Ros Hubbard, Patrick Spence, Aisling Walsh, Bob Quinn, Sue Bruce-Smith, Mick Hannigan and John Lynch.

Elated winners on the night included Eddie Hobbs collecting a second IFTA for Show Me The Money, the cast and crew of Pure Mule which picked up four awards on the night and Oscar nominated writer and director Terry George who received two accolades for Hotel Rwanda. Inside I'm Dancing director Damien O’Donnell collected the AIB Best Irish Film Award from Mischa Barton.

Pavee Lackeen, released on 11th November , picked up two major awards on the night from the independent jury, Best Irish Film and the IFB/BSE & NIFTC Breakthrough Talent Award for Perry Ogden. Writer and Director of the film Perry Ogden noted,"I'm very excited, I'm really chuffed to even be nominated for all the awards. When you set out on these things you don't know where it's going to go, you don't know if you are going to make a good film, but you hope to. There are so many ingredients that go into it and so many things that can go wrong on a film, to get to the end and get a release and be chosen for Venice, Toronto and to be nominated for the IFTA awards, it’s all just a great plus."

Moving tributes were paid to veteran actor David Kelly, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The seventy six-year-old received a standing ovation as Hollywood star Johnny Depp officially declared him, to Ireland and the world, as his ‘Hero’. The actor also received congratulations from Tim Burton, Clive Owen and Irish actor Colin Farrell, following a career that has spanned six decades.

Áine Moriarty added, “We are but a very small team behind the Awards and I couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated, loyal and hardworking bunch of people, all driven by an innate pride in our own Irish film and television industry.”
