Sharp Focus 2 Premieres Four New Shorts
02 Jun 2005 :

40 Irish young people have fulfilled their dream of making a first film thanks to the crosss-border initative Sharp Focus 2, which pairs established Irish filmmakers and writers with young people who have little or no experience in filmmaking.

Sharp Focus 2, initiated last year, is produced by the Calipo Theatre Company and four new shorts from the project received their premiere in Dublin last weekend. The four films, made by youth groups from all over Ireland, tackle everyday issues prevalent in young people’s lives ranging from jealous girlfriends and teenage pregnancy to town rivalry and absent parents.

To work with the young people Calipo invited some of the best film talent working in Ireland today including writers Mark O’Halloran (Adam & Paul), Martin Maguire (Love is the Drug), Colm Maher (Abbey Theatre) and A. J. White (The Clinic), and directors Neasa Hardiman (RTE), Graham Cantwell (Powertrip Productions), Colin Thornton (Calipo) and Brendan Muldowney (Innocence).

The films are:

‘Away Home’ - Devised by Shankill Young Women’s Project, Belfast

Set on the Shankill road this gentle comedy centres on the trials and tribulations of being in love, teenage pregnancy and over-protective parents.

‘Who’s Your Daddy’ - Devised by Monaghan Neighbourhood Project, Monaghan

Sharp Focus is funded by ADM/CPA under the EU Peace Programme and part financed by the Irish Government under the National development plan 2000 – 2006.
