The European Film Academy has announced 46 films in its shortlist for this year’s European Film Awards nominations with Terry George’s ‘Hotel Rwanda’, Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Adam & Paul’ and David McKenzie’s ‘Asylum’ representing Ireland in the competition.

Every year the European Film Academy shortlists approximately 40 films that are then sent to the members of the academy for final nominations.
‘Hotel Rwanda’, from Northern Ireland writer/director Terry George has won numerous awards in the past year, eariler this year the film was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture and an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
The low budget hit ‘Adam & Paul’ has picked up awards in festivals at home and abroad, was selected for the Berlin Film Festival and in October 2004 director Lenny Abrahamson won the Best Director Award at the Irish Film & Television Awards.
‘Asylum’ currently on release across Ireland, stars Natasha Richardson and Sir Ian McKellen and was shot in Ireland during 2003. It is a USA/Ireland co-production between Samson Films and Seven Arts Films for Paramount Classics and has won critical acclaim and awards across the globe.
Other notable nominees in the EFA shortlist include: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne’s ‘The Child’; Lars von Trier’s ‘Manderlay’; Arnaud Desplechin’s ‘Kings And Queen’; Jen-Pierre Jeunet’s ‘A Very Long Engagement’ and Pawel Pawlikowski’s ‘My Summer of Love’.
European Film Awards for Best director, actress, actor, screenwriter, cinematographer, composer, production designer and editor will be voted on by the Academy’s 1,600 members. Other awards are achievement in world cinema, the Prix Fassbinder, the Prix Fipresci, the Prix Arte (documentary), the Prix UIP (short film), and the Prix Screen International (non-European film). The Jameson’s People’s choice awards are voted on by the European public from an additional shortlist of 10 films per category. Scottish Actor Sean Connery will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
In the beginning of November, the nominations will be announced at the Seville Film Festival in Spain. The Award Ceremony with the presentation of the winners will take place in Berlin on December 3.
