Irish director John Crowley has been nominated for his work on the Martin McDonagh scripted comedy-drama ‘The Pillowman’. John is most famous for directing the IFTA winning feature film ‘Intermission’ and this is his first Tony nomination. Also shortlisted in the Best Direction of a Play category is Scott Ellis for ‘Twelve Angry Men’, Doug Hughes for ‘Doubt’ and Joe Mantello for ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’.
Cavanman Brían F. O'Byrne has been nominated for his role as an American priest in ‘Doubt’. Brían is hoping to go two-for-two after winning the Best Performance award in 2004 for ‘Frozen’. He faces competition from ‘The Pillowman’ lead Billy Crudrup, Philip Bosco ‘Twelve Angry Men’, Edward Albee ‘Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ and James Earl Jones ‘On Golden Pond’.
With seven nominations, including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play, ‘Doubt’ is the most cited production followed by Crowley’s ‘The Pillowman’ with six nominations. ‘The Pillowman’ is also up for Best Play.
