The Digital Hub Nabs Amazon.com & DC Studios
18 Apr 2005 :

Internet retail giant Amazon.com and Canadian video game developer DC Studios are to establish new European centres at Dublin’s Digital Hub.

Amazon.com will establish their European Systems & Network Operations Centre at the ‘digital depot’ building in Dublin 8. The new operation will provide infrastructure support for Amazon.com systems worldwide. Within two years, up to 25 highly skilled jobs will be created, with over 70% being for third-level graduates.

Philip Flynn, Chief Executive Officer, Digital Hub Development Agency said that Amazon’s decision to locate their European System & Network Operations team in Ireland was facilitated by the added value The Digital Hub was able to bring to Amazon’s business. This win is further evidence that the project is providing significant opportunities to grow Ireland’s emerging digital media sector.

“We are delighted to welcome Amazon to The Digital Hub. Key to Amazon’s decision to locate here is our extensive range of telecommunication infrastructures, which is among the best in Europe.

The Digital Hub’s server facilities and access services will facilitate Amazon having direct connectivity between Dublin and the United States of America. Efficient and effective connectivity is essential for Amazon’s Digital Hub centre, which will provide infrastructure support for Amazon systems and networks, which operate the company’s websites worldwide.”

DC Studios, a Canada based developer of video games for consoles, PCs and mobile phones, is to establish a new Development Studio at the Hub. With the support of IDA Ireland, this will be Ireland’s first overseas investment in console software development, creating 50 high quality jobs over the next three years, mostly for experienced graduates including software programmers, artists, designers and producers.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin TD said “this investment is an excellent fit with IDA’s strategy of attracting knowledge intensive investments to Ireland. The digital media sector has been identified as an area of opportunity for this country and DC Studios, a young ambitious company, will be a valued addition to the growing cluster of digital media activities in Ireland, in particular games development.”

DC Studios’ primary business is content development work for major console games publishers such as Konami, Ubisoft and Hip Interactive. It also develops its own content and is currently working on a new football game, scheduled for launch later this year. It has developed proprietary games technology, including a market leading toolkit for cellular phones - Fire™. DC Studios, established in 1999, employs nearly 80 people at its headquarters in Montreal, Canada, and in satellite studios in Glasgow, Scotland and Bristol, England.

Amazon and DC Studios arrival at The Digital Hub will bring to 48 the number of companies now located in the project.
